For example for TSP Curl p1, is better new, old or medium age?

I think there is little difference. If you use sponge, certainly the sponge changes over time. I EJ a lot so I may change often, but I really do not get rid of older sheets until I break some pimples.

I suspect it depends what you want - if you're looking for a grippy pip to generate your own spin, a newer sheet is likely to have more friction.

I tend to like pips the most after a few weeks have passed. They tend to get both a bit softer and a bit less grippy at that point, which makes it a bit harder to attack but makes it easier to generate both spin reversal and funk.

Like all rubber, new is better. LP pips tend to partially sever at their bases in your hitting zone which makes them play inconsistently. Only by bending them back and inspecting closely can one see the otherwise hidden damage. And since few LP players ever think to clean their LP (grimy LP also plays inconsistently) it could be argued that new LP would be cleaner than old and thus better.

I used to prefer older P1-r as it was easier to chop with less friction, but eventually had to replace it with a new sheet as too much rubber near the finger area peeled off. Then the problem was that it took time to adjust to the new sheet. My thinking now is to prefer consistency and the way to do that is to replace it more often.

Dornenglanz is definitely better when broken in....it depends on the style whether it is better an old or a new LP .

I agree with this 100% ... Plus, what I'm stating below, maybe rather obvious

I think, we'd all concur that, over time rubbers tend to lose grip/friction, and may become slower; and that less friction, for most parts, means more reversal ..

So, if you're someone who's game relies more upon reversal/using opponents spin, then, I guess you'd prefer older rubbers.

On the other hand, if you're the kind of player who relies more on creating his/her own spin, and/or hitting, then, I guess you'd prefer newer rubbers, that still have rough/grippy tops/sides..
