Hey Everyone

I just got myself 2 sheets of Globe 979, one red and one black

there is a difference between the 2. The Red sheet has smooth pips that are extremely grippy. It also comes with a white sponge.

The black sheet has rough pip tops that have almost no grip. the sponge on the black sheet is orange.

Haggisiv Have you ever seen this variation with your sheets of the globe 979?

by the way, How is the globe 979 for chopping? Im abit reluctant to try it because of its vertical pip arrangement.

I've actually only ever used the red one, never even looked at a black one... I'll see if I can dig one up at home and have a look.

You've probably seen my review on this rubber:
Review of Globe 979 long pimple rubber

It's an excellent LP rubber and quite grippy. I found it great for chopping!

Interesting that you mention it's a 'vertical pip', did you see the 'pip structure' thread? You might be able to answer the questions there.

Thanks for this that is very useful to know.

Just got Hallmark Frustration - not as weird as Juic Leggy but looks interesting.

Sorry, finally got a chance to check out the 979 red and blk. Below are pics of both of them. They look identical to me, and both have vertical pips arrangement. The sponges are orange on both of them.

Thanks haggisiv

for those up close macro shots :)

I am 100% sure my red sheet doesnt look anything like that

my red sheet is completely smooth like 755, and the sponge on it is white

the black sheet looks identical to the one in your photo and it has a orange sponge.

I got mine of a seller in ebay, so I have no idea as to what kind of stock he has

Could someone compare me the 979 with the 955 in Ox version?

I already have a 955 with 0.6mm sponge but I prefer Ox so I would try one of them.

They are very different. 755 has fairly stiff pips with smooth tips, 979 has shorter and thinner pips, a lot softer and rough grippy pips...
755 would be easier to control and have better spin reversal, 979 has good random effect and is more dangerous...but a fiar bit harder to control...

Do you mean the 955 or the 755?

I am looking for a OX LP, not frictionless as I already have the Monster. I thought about a LP giging my own spin, which is efficient close to the table and in defense.

So I have seen the Milky Way 955, the Globe 979 or the Kokatu 911

Sorry, I was comparing it to the 755. The 955 is closer to the 979 in that the pips are rough on top and softer then 755, but the 979 is softer. The 955 has much better control, but the 979 is a lot more deceptive.

Sorry to necro this thread, but I figure that it's better than starting a new one. I just started playing with this rubber (0.7mm sponge, red, rough tops) on the forehand of my (very) fast LKT Jpen, playing a single sided fast attack game with it. I mainly wanted to note that, when paired with this blade, 979 seems to have the best control to speed ratio of any rubber I've ever played with. That is to say, despite it being incredibly fast when I hit with it, I can place my shots VERY accurately.

I've so far won every game that I played while using it. It seems that I don't have to worry at all about spin when I hit quickly with it since the ball dwells for such a short time before rebounding off. All of my opponents seemed quite surprised when I returned their spinny drop shot and deep sidespin serves casually with a speedy, deep, and wide hit. The spin reversal isn't great, but that's not much of an issue since all I'm doing is hammering my opponents back with speedy returns until they miss or give me a chance for a kill.

Overall, great pip for an attacking game, though I have no idea what it's like for anything else.

Interesting... not sure if anyone has ever tried it for that style... I though it was a great chopping rubber, very dangeours but not the easiest to master... i stuggles with it close in, but my slow and soft blade could have a lot to do with it...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's my blade that's giving it most of the speed (it's a single play Ayous, really fast, really stiff and hard). Even so, it does say something good for the rubber, since I've never before experienced this kind of speed or control coming from this blade.

Sounds like it would be a nightmare to play against
