Post subject:  Facebook buttons?

Is there value is putting facebook "like" buttons in threads / post on the forum here?

If you're a regular Facebook user, it's a handy way to let your friends know that you've find a particular post/thread useful or interesting, as a click on the "like" button will automatically notify your friends. This is useful if you have TT friends on Facebook, and is also a useful way of promoting this forum and attracting more people with similar interests. Of course it's not used, it does not benefit the forum, and is simply free advertising for Facebook.

Do you think it's worthwhile?

I can't see it adding much value personally.

Lots of modern sites have it...so I'm sure they think it's worthwhile... I just don't know if many people would use it. Facebook is certainly getting very big and hugely popular!

The only thing that it may do is get some friends of friends traffic here and might have some impact on member number potential. I did sign up to a forum a friend's facebook wall showed, but I visited it a few times and couldn't be bothered after that |-)

For any of those people that votes "Yes worthwhile", can you elaborate how you would use it, and what benefits it offers to you?

I use social media a lot but probably wouldn't use it on a forum.

Doesn't look like there's a lot of interest in this... :^)

I voted yes because any exposure is better then none.

I voted no. I don't tlike the way Facebook handles personal information or keeps messing around with the privacy options settings so I wouldn't use that function here.

Why don't you put it in sir Haggisv :)
Wait for a week and make another poll thread.

I am interested.

I know that this is not about Facebook per se, but just the "like" function, but can I point out why I'm far more interested in this forum than I'm ever likely to be with Facebook or other "social media"?

For me the big difference is that here there is genuine discussion. Facebook is usually just a lot of comments without any real dialogue. Time after time I see people on Facebook having what I would call "parallel conversations": someone posts something, someone else comments but the comment is often of the "me too" variety, and very rarely does anyone ask a question. And there are lots of posts that are little more than orphans in cyberspace.

Here there is far more dialogue: questions are asked, answers given, opinions are considered. (Actually, if I have one major gripe, it is that opinions are not so often considered as rejected. Wouldn't it be nice if we actually took the time to ponder a little more before we hit the send button? And I include myself in this!)

A "like" button allows people to take a less involved approach to responding to comments. No reason has to be given, no thought other than "like" or "dislike". I voted above for the "I don't mind" option, but upon further reflection I'd "like" to change my mind to "Not worthwhile".

It can be a double-edged sword. On the one edge, Facebook is hugely popular and, therefore, a prime place for exposure. On the other edge, it does tend to be a place for trivial information exchange, because there's little focus.

Admittedly, I use Facebook mainly to keep up to date with my 'extended' family, and, more recently, it has become my main tool for sharing information and for private messaging. For these activities I find Facebook is a really powerful and worthwhile tool. Personally, I have never experienced privacy issues or anything more sinister. The only thing remotely annoying about it are the advertisements and the occassional 'me me me' status updates by some of my self-obsessed friends.

Going back to the topic at hand, it wouldn't bother me if this forum had a 'like' button (so many sites seem to have them now), but I doubt I would use it (just as I never use other sites' 'like' buttons). Well, I do occasionally point friends to interesting YouTube videos or similar, but very rarely. And, in all honesty, I do appreciate when my friends point me to an interesting video clip or article.

So, just as Tassie suggests, I'm reconsidering my position on this function being added to this forum as I type this and, now, I'm warming to the idea more and more. I know that I have TT friends who seldom visit this site but do visit Facebook and it would be more convenient to link an interesting thread from this site than have to 'manually' find the thread on this site at some later date. This has happened a few times already - yesterday, in fact.

Thinking as I type, I could also use Facebook as a kind of archive of interesting forum threads, which are 'permanently' added to my Facebook profile.
