A friend has given me a sheet of Milky Way Pluto in 1.5mm. Has anyone any ideas what kind of characteristics its likely to have on an A/R carbon blade please? |

Didn't think Pluto qualified as a short pip. Looking at it from the side I'd say pips are long, but mostly advertised as "medium", which is why I bought it. Not exactly an answer, but rather a supplementary question and fill-in. I don't mean to hijack the thread, but my situation is perhaps not so different from what you envision, Darksider. Just glued a sheet of Pluto OX to a fiber reinforced blade (Yasaka Synergy, I believe it's fibreglass or similar, not carbon). Tried it against a return board, and it seems to provide spin reversal with brush looping/chopping as well as with block/push, while I can add my own spin with more impact on loops/chops (and drive/control strokes). Weird but fun. Might this be a cross between anti and long pip behaviour? I'll know more when I have faced some more responsive opponents (responsive verbally as well as with their playing). Bear in mind that I am a newcomer to the dark side, and do not know what to expect. If my comments reveal flaws in my technique, please let me know! |

It's quite a low friction short pip, although some call it a medium pip, which gives it some of it's LP characteristics. |

My setup in brief:
IOW, should I go get a sponge immediately, or is is possible that this combo might work? (Not playing until tomorrow, so still there is time...) On the other side of the blade I have a "729 General" on 1,5 sponge, so while the bat is on the light side (pun not intended), it's not extremely light. |

Have tried the setup as mentioned above on a few sessions, and I find it has its advantages. The Pluto gives very good control, and seems to yield some reversal effect. Have only played against a very good female player who sometimes visits us (AFAIK only two girls in Norway are rated higher), and I think it went better than ever. Didn't have the opportunity to get verbal assessment from her, though, so I'm not sure how my strokes were. If I tried "brushing" the spin off her pendulum serves to return a short ball, I noticed a sudden drop to almost no grip, an effect I was unable to control. I suspect a thin sponge (or perhaps just a slower blade) might help with that. (It may also be that I just need more practice.) If I try more with Pluto (I probably will), I'll report my findings. |
