Hi all
I would like to ask for your recommendation for a new Short Pips for my shake hand forehand.
About me and my style.
I am a 40 years old player (so in my best years  ) playing with a frictionless anti (currently Neubauer Buffalo 1,8) on by backhand and the Spinlord Waran in 1,8 on my forehand. As a blade a use the Dr. Neubauer Hercules or the Yinhe Bogen
I switched 2 years ago from inverted rubber to shortpips.

About my style:
I am an intermediate player with a german TTR Rating at around 1775.
I have a really good service (I would say it is the best at my game) with variable spin amount (strong spin for a short pip or nearly nothing), good spin deception (hiding the rotational direction) and a good, variable placement.
Means per set I make 2-4 direct points with my service and a lot of good assists.
In contrast do my service my service return is weak! Not as week as with inverted but still week. Here I am in the lucky situation that I can hide this weakness by using my anti for the return.
In the rally I made a good transition from looping the ball late with much spin as I did it with inverted to a more aggressive smashing style I do now.
On backspin I still try to loop the ball and to attack the block or counter spin.
My forehand block is underdeveloped and fore sure under average for my ranking and my style.
In general I am not the typical anti or long pips player trying to cover 70 % of the table with the anti. BUT: the more passive the opponent plays (I don´t mean a defender, more the passive block and push player) the more I get passive and backhand dominated.
But this is not a technical or equipment issue it. This is a pure psychological issue.

No the real reason of my thread
I am still struggling in finding the best short pips.
I tried a huge amount of different rubber, but I am still struggling which one fits the best. (and why and what is the reason for and which one has the highest potential to support my style.)

What did it try
• Spionlod Waran 1.8
Super rubber. Good amount of spin on services. Really good (the best?) smashing rubber. Weak on opening spin and not huge disturbing or deception effect.
Currently my number one.

• TSP Spectol 21 1,7-1.9
Great rubber. Good amount of spin on services (but funnily only on topspin and top-sidespin serves, issues to produce good quality backspin)
Better opening loop (quality) but less control then Waran. Sometimes to bouncy. So too much unforced errors on smashing.

• TSP Spinpips 21 1,7-1.9
Great for service. Ok for looping. Issues with the smash, no, nothing, nada deception on blocking.
Good rubber, but I did 'n get warm with it

• TSP Spinpips 1.7-1.9
Great for service. Better for smashing, ok for looping. But I had huge control issues (but was really just a short short test)

• Victas 102 1,8
Same as Spinpis, but less feel-good factor

• Victas 101 1,8
Interesting rubber.
Ok on opening spin, ok on smashing, good on blocking. Opponent hat huge issues while warm up. Late no issues at all. Reason: all blocks are the same, they are always with no spin. After my partner recognize this he had no issues to overcome me

• Haifu Dolphin max
The sponge was too hard and too thick. Some great balls but more bad balls.
Good service, good opening spin, but at all to fast and thick for me

• Mizuno Booster SA 1,8
Great rubber. Good service, good opening spin good smash. And still feel not good with this rubber. There is nothing special. Not the smash of the Waran, not the Service of the Spinpips, not the deception of the Victas 101 not the power of the Spectol

• Tibhar Speedy Soft d.tecs 1,5
Nothing for me. Too slow, no spin on service

• 802-40
Not my rubber. To mushy, to "normal" can't smash with it. Maybe it's because of the thick sponge.

• 802 (with a white soft sponge?) about 1,8
Yes yes yes
That’s my current favorite.
Great services. Super opening topspin (my every time training partner – he is so used to my game) blocked so many balls over the table, had so much trouble with my service it was great!
But: yes there is a but. The sponge is too soft. I have no deception (what would be ok) and less control on smashing. This is not an issue against good players, because I know I need to smash and I know I will do errors, but this works for me.
But against lower rated opponents (the blocking and pushing ones) this is a huge issue. It is still not inverted, so I cannot power loop the high push, but I can also not smash them. This will also be an issue against player at the same or even higher level, as soon as they play smart. As soon as they recognize the I will win as long as they topspin the ball or push it fast and low and I will lose as soon as they just play the ball at the table, I will have huge trouble



So long story, short question.
1. What 802 rubber can that be with a white really soft sponge
2. What could be an option? I think the 802 top sheet could be perfect for me (service and opening spin) but the soft sponge is maybe a little bit too bouncy.
3. Any other ideas what could I test?

Maybe contact Japsko. They're experts in this, and will custom glue for you.



Waran has quite soft and bouncy sponge, and you do fine with that.



I use Degu, which is softer again than Waran, still great for smashing, and has lots of spin for serving and topspin shots.

try regular spectol not 21,or you can buy in eacheng 802 ox and a sponge you like or ask for 802-40 40° sponge or the new red or blue spectol

You might try the new Spectol Blue which I find to be much less bouncy than the original Spectol.

Your 802 with white sponge could be a Mystery-version, maybe Mystery III? It is said to be a tad harder and faster than regular 802 and the rubber is different.

Pictures of 802 Mystery III seem to indicate a white/whitish sponge.

Have you tried Dr. Neubauers pips.
I also use anti and s/p.its difficult to find the right one.i like soft pips with control but they are not the best for smashing.
i have some waran and will try soon.Have you tried stiga radical or royal-very fast.

Yes true. But the 802 with this white sponge is a little bit more mushy. So waran provides a more direct touch.


I tried Beautry in 1.8
I don´t know. This was not my rubger. I didn't produce good services and my smash was not save, but maybe I should retest it.

Eacheng isn't the best adress for Japanese rubbers; if they have one it often is quite expensive. I'd use ttnpp or a more local dealer first.

Eacheng for the 802 Mystery in 1.7mm is $7.50, orders sub $24 shouldn't be a problem (at least that's for Europe)

ttnp is located in Hong Kong (?!) but they've got the Spectol, sub $30 iirc.

Tabletennis11 is located in Estonia, that would fix the douane-issue but, yeah, TSP does cost some more €€ there.

Ja, gibt's denn überhaupt Schwyzer Händler?

Yes we do have dealer in Switzerland
But they don't sell Japanese sponge only

Btw
I can't find any Spector sponge at TTNpP or eacheng
I can not find any dealer at all selling tsp, yasaka or any other top brand sponge only

Uh, no, TSP is whole rubber only. I think the advice from Dariowei to try Spectol (without 21) does point at the rubber (including sponge), alternatively to buy an ox 802/802-40 and a separate Japanese sponge.

Yes the hardness of both sponge and the pips keeps the control high as long as you use enough friction and aren't too passive with the rubber.

Another option is 802-1 which I thought was a little softer and better control than regular 802.

I found Waran too hard for good control.
