You want to be doing a brush motion where you use the pips to add backspin to the ball. This will make it hard for your opponents to attack the ball, usually making them have to do a slow loop or do a push which is harder to control because of the added backspin.

You want to push THROUGH the ball and really focus on brushing it because you can add a lot of backspin this way.

Yeah, I worked quite hard on playing a long pushing stroke with Spectol. It was almost like a chop, but over the table. I used my elbow as a lever with a very loose wrist and tried to maximise the time that the ball contacted the topsheet.

Obviously you can't push short like this.

If you try to use an inverted-like stroke, the spin will be a bit random. Sometimes I've been able to get quite heavy backspin like this, other times it'll be pure float. I guess it depends on the angle of your bat and the incoming spin.

If you want to float the ball, just angle your bat so it's a bit more straight, and push forwards/up. This will reduce contact with the sponge and minimise friction.
