I'm surprised it's ITTF approved. I didn't think there were any ITTF events that use 44mm balls.

44mm leagues and tournaments are actually fairly common in Japan (and several years ago, I thought they were catching on in Europe). They aren't affiliated with ITTF, but I think JTTA organizes them (I think that's a JTTA stamp on the rubber, not ITTF). They're one of these efforts to come up with a form of table tennis that is less dependent on spin. (Other examples would be hardbat and sandpaper, though these seem to have begun in a different way, and TTX, which seems to have flopped.) They don't just use the 44mm ball, the net is higher and rubbers are limited to short pips with 1.5mm sponge (not sure if you're allowed to use less sponge, or no sponge). I don't know if you can use ANY short pips with 1.5mm sponge or if you have to use specially authorized 44mm-certified rubber. (Probably the latter - it'd be a way to bring in money, and it would make policing equipment less of a headache at tournaments.)

What would happen if you use these rubbers with the 40mm ball? Probably pretty much the same as using, say, 802 with 1.5mm sponge. Would probably be pretty good for penhold blockers.

By the way, the 44mm ball is a great ab-initio training tool. The sort of thing you might want to have on hand if you've set up a table at the local mall and invited random members of the public to hit around.

50+. Actually, makes we wonder if there's a 44+ ball now.

That linked page is VERY interesting. There are videos of people playing rallies with this 50+ ball.. I can't tell if they are using pips out rubber, but the net is higher by 20mm.

Quote:
4. Entertainment-grade 50mm giant ball:

Material: ABS+ modified plastic,
Diameter: 50mm,

Weight: 4.1g,

Equipment: a, granular glue or anti-arc glue,

b. The net is heightened by 20mm,

c. The organizing committee of the competition will provide the competition equipment.

Don't know if this means they require pips-out or anti, hard to tell with machine translations.

Scroll down a bit and you find out that Yinhe is selling FOUR different 40+ balls, all ITTF certified. If you want seamed ABS balls there's a Y40+, and a H40+. No idea what the difference is. And if you want a seamless ball (presumably PU), you have a choice between the 40+ and the S40+. :?:

There's quite a few rubbers for 44mm ball on the LARC. Perhaps the JTTA still requires a rubber to the on the LARC for it to be used for their 44mm competitions.

There are pips designed for the 44mm ball that are listed in LARC like Royal Prince and Moristo 44.
This player in blue shirt use Tibhar Linfort Power SP for 44mm Ball but in this video is playing with 40+.
