Oh good grief - how old is this? Last October. Just noticed it. I'd have commented earlier if I'd seen it.

Well, you seem to do Brett's "nodding" thing pretty well when blocking RPB. The forehand... Um, well, yeah, it looks weak. No real arm movement, the grip seems weak too. Maybe if you set the camera back and do some actual topspin drives and loops...

Nice digs... Looks like a bunker.

Dude if you record videos on Android and use Google photos to backup the files it goes to google photos website... Which is where my video is sitting.

Super! Good to know my RPB block is doing something right.

My FH has improved since then but like I have mentioned elsewhere maybe my grip is like a literal pencil/pen hold :-D   and not like the "chopstick" like hold it is supposed to be. :-D this is Indian-style Chinese cuisine   ;-)

I can still generate a lot of power. I will upload a new recording this weekend hopefully... Any advise on the
stroke
swing
crouching more
contact point

Any thing in particular or generally to improve FH power control and spin is most welcome!

Thanks!

I'd say the main advantage of the penhold is the freedom of the wrist to create spin. With your modified penhold, it looks like you need to pinch quite hard, which will reduce wrist mobility considerably. Also, it looks like the bat angle adjustment range is limited. How do you perform against underspin?

Another advantage of penhold is that the "crossover" between backhand and forehand is largely eliminated. It looks to me like you don't really have a traditional penhold backhand, only reversed. This means that you bring back the crossover, and also that the advantage of a lighter bat (sponged rubber on only one side) is not available to you.

To me it looks like your grip combines the disadvantages of penhold (reduced reach, increased load on hand/wrist) and shakehand (limited wrist mobility, crossover weakness) instead of the advantages. That said, in the video you look confident and seem to play consistently, which is important. You are a mature player so if that grip works for you, keep it. For a younger player, or if any of the potential issues I mentioned is something you have experienced, I would advise more traditional grip, be it penhold or shakehand.

The YouTube app has had a "record" button for a while now. You can do it one of two ways - you can live stream (which I don't recommend unless you have high bandwidth 4G or onsite WiFi) or you can record the video first, and then upload. Later you can edit the video using YouTube in your web browser on your PC. I think you can also use the YouTube app to upload already-recorded video.

Yeah, most penhold players (including Xu Xin) wouldn't use the RPB for blocks like that. They'd use the front side rubber. The reason you can't is your grip.

How about using a wider stance to get a bit lower? I like the bowing brett clark suggested movement in the backhand. To me it looks like your arm is driving your hip movement in the forehand rather than the other way around. Can you post a video of a forehand loop?

Here is the video of my C-pen Pencil grip. I don't have a "wrist" mobility problem at all ... in fact the opposite  wrist is too loosey  so I tend to adjust the grip so that I can either lock my wrist or unlock it by squeezing my thumb and back-fingers or my index and back-fingers.

If I squeeze the thumb it will allow me to keep the wrist almost to the point of Shakehand level ! :-D
Index squeezing allows me to play very very late or too early all-over the table

Also I can loop underspin like a champ    Maybe I will try to get a very very good LP chopper to let me film... not sure if it will happen though :-P

Excellent!

Good to see that I was mistaken. From your playing video I had a different impression of your grip.

That's the front side. It was the back side that I thought was weird I the video.

Also the "reason" in the RPB Block video it looks different is simply due to the way I am actually gripping. If you do notice, my fingers are almost at the EDGES of the rubber .... meaning I am gripping almost along the length of the handle ! :-D

My grip allows me the freedom to RPB block, RPB push, RPB cut, RPB Flick, RPB loop, RPB loop-drive, RPB power loop, etc etc etc :-D So ... yes I am not at all able to consciously do the TPB ... it does happen unconsciously like when I am suddenly "trapped" by a body ball/left hip location ball ...

But I haven't been able to consistently TPB at all. I do all the release the thumb - rotate the handle - lock in the index finger ... But for the life of me I simply can't close the bat angle without standing up taller :-P
