Although you sometimes seem heavily muscled people playing TT on the amateur scene, in general "body building" and table tennis don't really mix. In table tennis you need to be able to move fast and explosively - the sorts of exercises you'd do to encourage this are plyometric and high rep, which is not the sort of thing you do when you're trying to build muscle bulk.

Played well, table tennis makes huge use of legs and core, so if you look at the stop players you'll see that they have big, powerful thighs. But they don't look like weightlifters, or american football players.

Will you lose weight if you play TT? Maybe - depends what you eat, when and how often your train, and to what intensity.

I can speak to this a bit. I would say that you should workout (body build, of you want to call it that) to help support you playing table tennis. Yes, there are benefits from playing table tennis, but use it as a way to a variety to an active lifestyle. I workout three days a week, and play table tennis three days a week (these are on off days from each other).

The challenge with table tennis (and other sports, as well) is that it is very one side of the body dominant, and so your body develops in an uneven manner, and these imbalances can create problems, so use your workout days to help support what is not worked during table tennis and also recuperative and supporting exercises (rotator cuff, knees, hips, etc).

Hope this helps.
