Title says it all. Simple question, or is it?

More to the point, what are you actually going to do about it, not what are you thinking of doing, or what in an ideal world, simply what are you going to do about it?

Consistency-and currently doing nothing about it due to time and resources (lack of local coaching mainly)

My dream is to become a world ranked player, so sadly, everything is not good enough. I've settled on becoming a good club level player, about 2000 USATT.

Things that I'm working on
- Service. My service is ok, sometimes get attacked by 2000 level players, so working on consistency and placement, maybe more variation
- Service return. Inconsistent vs 2000 level players. Need to not be so aggressive and with better placement.
- FH consistency, working on loops to the BH and to the elbow. Can do it during practice but not so well in a match.
- Not rushing. Always feel like I'm under pressure. Not sure what to do about that.

Lots more but that's what I'm working on now.

I need to work on 1) getting better angles, and 2) staying focused on strategy in a match.

Good question for those playing competitively with commitment and want to improve. In my case, though my weaknesses exceed my strengths, I will honestly answer 'I will rest on my laurels' without any concern as my sole aim in playing is for fun and recreation only

Need to prepare for playing in the Veterans category. First I have to try playing in the MENs category   :D

So trying to go on walks and cycling at least 3 or 4 times a week. Focus a lot more on fitness, trying to reduce junk food :-P More protein+greens, less fat+carbs diet. No more than 2 cups of rice :-P per day etc etc.... it is tough :envy: :@ :D

Also looking up open competitions and trying to prepare for those.

Backhand loop against backspin or float ball. it's a common strategy against LP players like me to play a deep backspin or float to my BH where I normally play with long pimples. I need to be able to play a strong loops with my inverted rubber. So I need to anticipate that it's coming, flip over the bat, and loop with heavy spin.
I always practice this in practice sessions, but rarely use it in competition because I don't have consistency. I need to keep practicing.

I need to learn to attack with my LP. I try to attack backspin but can’t do it with enough consistency or speed to bother most opponents so usually end up pushing.

Also my serving in doubles needs improvement. I find it difficult to do serves that can’t be attacked. Not good for my doubles partner! I don’t seem to have the same issue in singles for some reason.

As a similar player I think you need to practice 2:1 backhand to forehand. My FH is much better than my BH, so now at the club I do a few FH in warmup then move over and finish the FH to FH warmup with my BH using inverted. I also use inverted on my BH during entire games during club matches. I usually can win, as we have a weak club, but the point is to get better.

Interesting and one I often see overlooked when coaching (younger kids) where the kids, especially boys, will try and go for power almost straight away. The cycle for training is often Consistency and Technique first, then move on to placement and accuracy and only then ramp up the speed, power and spin. Ultimately, if you keep the ball on the table longer than your opponent you win.

Fastest way to learn. Tactics and mental strength. Your second point is one I really suffer from. I can coach and rally watching the other persons technique and tactics but put me in a game situation and it's like my mind is focusing on anything but the point to come or what I'm trying to achieve. Do as I say not as I do springs to mind. Unfortunately if you coach but can't execute what you advocate often players will look at you and say, if you are so good why don't you do it yourself, or if you are right, why don't you do it yourself. ;(

This is a biggy for me. Coming from short pips use on my backhand I would either try and hit through, or roll backspin (or push). Actually spinning the ball never was a real option in my game. Now I use inverted I really struggle getting away from the "rolling the ball back" syndrome instead of actually spinning it, with the emphasis on spin. This is also the case on my forehand to a degree. Big problem is, not everyone can push the ball and really dig it so it's loaded with backspin, especially when starting out the game so practicing against genuine backspin can be hard.

Why don't you stay with SP if your natural tendency is to hit the ball rather than spin it?
