I wondered why only a few people never play Med-pips penhold, so I tried it myself, here's what I found about it.

First of all, equipment, real cheap
DHS SR-B (Cpen of SR-A) 12 USD (ALL-)
Dawei 388c-1 (1.5mm) 6 USD
Yinhe Mercury II Medium (1.7mm) 6 USD
24 USD, REAL CHEAP.

I do a .....

Serve with inverted, then twiddle and use the pips for the point.

What I found : I have more trouble against backspins than topspins.

Topspins are either blocked or chop-blocked, it came back very disturbed and deceptive. so I get most of my points here.

Deception results in some balls popping too high and smashable, so I usually do that when it pops high

I mostly push a backspin ball very shortly, mainly because I don't want to give an extremely weak ball.

Then there's 2 things :
- Opponent/You took a mistake and the ball went to the net/too long
- Your opponent pushed long and now there are some choices.

1. Attempt a Drive.
Try driving it, a variation will benefit because the ball will have a small topspin/no spin, this may cause mistakes by the opponent if they fail to recognize the spin. But if they do, they will topspin it.

2. Push it long back.
Now this is a RISK, as the ball has just decent spin (Medium Pips are less spinny than short) , it's easier for the enemy to loop the ball, so get ready to block/chopblock

The main thing is, use the disturbance of the pips and vary your attacks with your wrist usage, and force the opponent to a mistake that gives you a point, but this may backfire if not done correctly, IT IS BETTER TO RISK A SHOT, BECAUSE WEAK SHOTS MAY MEAN YOUR RALLY IS GIVING THE POINT TO THE OPPONENT.

;)

Even more update,
Now if we're going to talk why no one use them, that's because there's too much variety of spin and strokes, so it's quite hard to learn, and it provides less usefulness compared to short pips and long pips, but it offers versatility

If you use RPB, it is possible, but use 2 fingers only in the BH side, otherwise your TPB/RPB will be slow.

You need to setup an RPB kill, throw some varying spins and force the ball to pop high enough, then simply do an RPB full stroke.

I guess if you have a thicker sponge, this will increase the control of mid pips while enabling loops and drives. The reason why only a few people use mid pips is because pen hold style requires a lot of variation today and short pips probably does so better. If you put your mid pips on your backhand, I suppose you are twiddling, if you use it to attack, then it requires a more precise and more powerful stroke.

Wow, you predicted my post!

I have tried 2 more things
- 2.1mm 42-44 sponge on frictional pips (Kokutaku 110)
- 2.1mm 36-38 sponge on the Kokutaku 110

Harder sponge gives better speed but less spin.
The softer sponge gives me the ability to drive but not lift a Backspin Ball well

So I chose the hard one for better speed and hits. then I went to the tournament

Results were shocking!

My opponents were frustrated over this MP-Inverted RPB combo, They played no spin balls long fast serve, then I use RPB, and they topspin it back, then WHAM! I hit the ball deep FH and he is done!

Made it to semifinals, but I seem to cannot defeat this pips-specialist/rich guy who only uses butterfly player, gave me ghost serves (short) all the time or no spin short. then destroy me with his kill topspin, at least I lost 2-3, not 0-3.

I do think RPB flick will help to defeat these ghost serves, but you really need both arm and flicky wrists to lift the supreme heavy backspin.

Cool experiment. I wish I had the patience to overcome the initial learning curve. I HATE playing a skilled medium pips player. They give me fits.

There is a very fine balance with medium Pips in being able to deal with spin both passively and aggressively and ones own ability to apply any spin. The different brands and sponge thicknesses all have a different balance. You juts have to find the one that works for you best against your typical opponents. Also coming from inverted or spinny SP there are some new techniques to learn such using a stiff wrist to block or counter hit topspin - creates nasty low no spin balls which loopers hate.

Medium pips are actually excellent against back spin the problem you have may be due to your RPB style.

Those are some interesting finds. i am using galaxy 987 and firendship 563 at 1.8mm and i have pretty much the same results, backspin to my backhand wing is nightmarish to counter, the spin seems to be random at times after i push, but my forehand is a deadly weapon. but i am starting to suspect that i should have gone with even thicker sponge to enable actual loops, reduce spin reversal and maybe increase the "dampening" effect of the MP

I made a combo for fun using Yinhe Pluto 1.8 and Yinhe Mercury II 2.2 mm for backhand.

I used it about 5 sets, and didn't work so well, because despite hitting very well at the warm up, I tried topspinning, so it won't work unless you

Then, a couple of months later, I used it again, this time I managed to hit or flick every single ball off the bounce or top of the bounce with minimal effort.

As it was for fun only, I sold the racket to a neighbor which is very pleased of it.
