Hello,

In a reverse pendulum is a left sidespin possible? Similarly is right sidespin possible in a pendulum serve?

The answer in my books to both of the above question is no because you are striking the right side of the ball in reverse pendulum and hence left sidespin is not possible and for pendulum serve you strike the left side of the ball, hence right sidespin is not possible.

I think you are correct. You can still fake it with a reverse follow-through though.

What do you mean by "left" sidespin? I assume you mean the ball rotates clockwise when viewed from above and the serve has been executed by a right-handed person.

Both senses of rotation (clockwise and counter-clockwise) are possible. You simply have to hold your racket either in your left or right hand. Sometimes I use a punch-type sidespin serve with my backhand. You could combine this motion with that of a regular backhand sidespin serve thus disguising spin in similar fashion to the reverse pendulum forehand serve.

You're talking about right handed people, right? And FOREHAND pendulum serves? I'd say you're right... unless you can disguise what is actually a reverse pendulum as a normal pendulum serve by quickly snapping your wrist back again before contacting the ball (see .. what was his name.. Guo Yuehua's serve - he actually manages to "vibrate" the bat back and forth several times - I've tried it myself, can't do it.. and it's not particularly hard to see what spin he puts on the ball).
