Hello everyone, I’m 60 years old, born in Vietnam and now living in Georgia USA.
Have been playing TT on/off since about 16 in Saigon. My U.S. rating is around 1150 (25 years ago) but I’m guessing my current rating is around 1800 (I’m playing 3-4 times/week at a local club with people rating from 1500 – 2000). I don’t play tournament so my U.S rating is remained unchanged, but that’s ok.

I’m handshake, inverted, both wing attacker, loop/drive however, about 5 months ago I have switched my backhand to short pips after watching Mima Ito in Sweden final. :D

Working in Aerospace graphic art. Love traveling, reading, mechanic work, cooking and fine art.

Switching backhand to short pips was a difficult decision for me especially my backhand was good with inverted rubber, everyone at my club was very surprised.
But my philosophy is, one can’t loop forever as (s)he's getting older, however with short pips, I probably can block till 70's (i hope :). And, I can always attack from my forehand.

I’m the only backhand sp player at my club so there were times I feel lost as no one to share frustration or to seek for advice, now I found Ooak forum and have been learning/studying great information.

I would like to thanks all members for sharing your valuable advises.

- where are you from, country and club, where you play : Italy
- how long you've been playing (how old? ): I'm 55 yo (!), I played regularly when I was 11-14, then I stopped for about 40 years and started again just 6 months ago (eek! :o )
- playing style : quite an offensive kind of a player, if I see half a chance I can not resist. Maybe a more natural attitude for flat shots, blocks and smashes, but I'm working on my spins
- level : well, I can't be much more than a beginner

- job or what you do outside TT : Industrial Relations
- other hobbies : no much time for other hobbies, but I like theatre and movies, and I practice mountain bike a bit
- how you stumbled upon this forum: quite casually

Greetings from New Zealand,

I'm 28 and have been playing for about 8-9 years, I used to play in various local and national tournaments in NZ as a junior and also on our regional mens team.

Unfortunately I have been out of the competitive scene for about 4 years due to University study, and I also became a Tennis Coach somehow (about 6 months after I started actually playing Tennis haha).

Anyway, I'm looking to get back into the game and helping kickstart Table Tennis in our region again seeing it's in a bit of a slump at the moment.

Looking forward to some of the pretty good discussions on the game & equipment here :D

Hi Everyone,

I'm from New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. I have only played at home and with friends until now, but am joining the New Orleans Table Tennis Club this week.

I'm 33 and have been playing since I was a teenager. I stopped playing for a while and have recently picked it back up. I am an intermediate-level shakehand player that needs to work on his backhand.

I'm a software engineer that plays music, builds guitar pedals, and does all sorts of woodworking. I came across the forum when looking for information about building blades. I found the legendary "Make a blade" thread started by Ross Leidy and now I am hooked. I've now completed my first blade, with many more to come. I'll be posting some pics and info in the aforementioned thread in due time.

Cheers,

Gumbo Jr

Hello folks,

I am from the very southern part of the Netherlands, currently not playing at a club but might rejoin my old club after the summer. I recently ordered an outdoor table to practice a bit against my old man and little brother. My father used to play at a decent local standard so he should be good practice for me, I never could beat him when I was younger but it seems we are much closer in skill nowadays.

I used to play when I was younger from age 10 to 13 or thereabouts was an okay-ish player, did win some local youth tournaments and always played decently in competition. Been nearly 10 years since I stopped playing but I started to get the urge of playing again after playing on a terrible camping-table while on vacation. While on vacation I started to look up some recent pro matches and other advice/training related table tennis vids (apparently we use plastic balls now!) which really peaked my interest again.

I honestly have no clue about my level right now simply because I haven't played enough. I have to say I was surprised about how easy I i picked my game up again, I may have forgotten most of my training from all those years ago but my strokes felt very natural right away. Need to play vs club members to get a proper idea of my level though.

Cheers,

~Anon

HI All,

I am Sue, live in Columbus Ohio, USA. I started playing table tennis February 2018 and started with DHS 4002 paddle for 4 month and moved to DHS PG7 blade with H8 for FH and TinArc 5 for BH, for about a year. And since 2019 May, I started testing a couple of carbon blades and a few 729 and DHS rubbers for upgrade. And recently settle down to DHS301 blade and DHS H3 for FH and Skyline 360 for BH.

I do not have a play style yet other than stay close to table. Also I went to the club for a month this May to see my rating and was told about 1000 to 1200 for USATT ratings.

I am an Material Scientist/Chemist and I hope to learn and share some table tennis skills and information here with you all here in this forum.

Thanks

Sue

Hi all, I'm Holand from Clfton.

I honestly for once would love to see one day a world tournament where everyone has to play with the same equipment. Everyone will slam me for saying that because they all love the variety in terms of equipment and think that this is so great. But I believe Boll is actually right that CNT actually do have an access to equipment that isn't exactly the same from anywhere else.

I'm not saying that Ma Long isn't the goat, and that their technique isn't the best in the world. I'm saying just look at the sport like tenis and there's usually a pure skill involved, no pretentious equipment that makes a different impact depending on the equipment.

It sparks all these debates about the short pips used by Falck and going to the final or H3 National used by Ma Long etc. Even though the two of these played with entirely different equipment I actually didn't find it that interesting. If at least there was one tournament where everyone had to play with the same rackets (and even the ones that were medium speed which would make rallies probably even more interesting), rather than all of these commercialised expensive crap that gets quickly worn out after a few months of playing.

I had the most fun with table tennis when we played it at school and none of us had any of these ridiculous expensive super fast rackets that cost you 300$. All of us had just simple rackets that can do some moderate spin and that was the most fun game I'd ever played.

I'd find the matches a lot more interesting if the most top skilled in the world players fought against each other with medium speed rackets. 90% of the current rallies are ended in a short no-spin or little spin serve, and then a 3rd kill-shot attack. With everyone fighting against each other there would be a lot less pretentiousness, and would undisputably reveal who is truly the most skilled and the best player out there.

I have no doubt Ma Long or other from CNT would still be on top. But I'm saying at least the rallies would involve perhaps running and chasing after the ball, like occasionally you see right now which is only perhaps 5% of the entire match. The rest are just a boring serve and kill shots and if you watch Chinese super league they are even worse because players are taught to just always return the ball with maximum high risk power and so 95% of the rallies don't have more than 2-3 returns.

I know you have the ping pong now with hard-bats, but that isn't exactly the same... I do like a little spin, whereas hard bats tends to have too many hard-hitting, even when they're looping there's more contact required and less brushing which makes looping quite rare and harder to make.

However watch Chinese super league and it's about a serve, backhand flick and the 3rd shot is almost always an all-out top-spin which is either a kill-shot or goes outside the table and flies at 100km/h.

Hi Kanamapa,

You started off so well. Then your second paragraph wandered.

This thread is for introductions. Who you are, how you found OOAK forums, what gear you used to and currently do use, a little about your experience. I think that the first post even has a template to organise this if you were so inclined.

Opinions about how the ITTF rules the table tennis world and equipment restrictions etc deserve a post somewhere else. I would encourage you to cut and paste from this post to a new one in another section of the forum where more people might read it and post back their agreement, ideas or disagreements, experiences etc.

Welcome.
