It's on again. This year, I think because of the centenary of ANZAC there will be 2 combined teams representing Australia & New Zealand. The international teams are from China, Korea, Japan and Malaysia. I stress that the overseas teams are not representing their country, but company, university or school teams from that country.

Yours truly will be umpiring. It is on Friday night (but I won't be there), Saturday afternoon and evening, & Sunday in Ryde, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

This year it appears that we will have a proper amount of umpires.

Wow, lucky you! You'll see plenty of good matches I would think!
What's the venue like?

Typical multi-use hall. They either have or bring in indoor portable grandstand seating. Audience is a couple of metres from the surrounds. Presumably 3 tables in the show area.

Still no idea of who exactly is in the teams.

Korea (the team from) ended up winning, with China (the team from) coming second.

This year the program didn't point out what sort of team represented each country. The Chinese team was juniors from Luneng-Shandong, and the Japanese women had tracksuit tops that mentioned an airline, whether the team they were part of represented the airline or was simply sponsored by the airline I don't know.

From the program, here are the participants:
Australia
(M) Wade Townsend ITTF 713, Australia 6
(M) Trent Carter ITTF ?, Australia ?
(M) Benjamin Gould ITTF ? Australia ?
(F) Michelle Beaumont ITTF 593 Australia 4
(F) Fiona Zhu ITTF ? Australia ?
(F) Jiaming Xhao ITTF 631 Australia ?

New Zealand
(F) Tianyi Li Reigning NZ Champion
(M) TengTeng Liu Past NZ Champion

China
(M) Jinbao Ma
(M) Sheng Xi
(F) Chen Jia
(F) Mengyao Zhang

Japan
(M) Koyo Kanamatsu ITTF 456
(M) Aoto Asazu ITTF563
(F) Misato Niwa ITTF 187
(F) Miho Takahashi ITTF ?

Korea
(M) Jihoon Cho
(M) Su dong An
(F) Cha Ra Park
(F) Min Hyung Jee

Interestingly, the referee (high up in the ITTF) seemed to be more concerned about presentation, eg that when signalling a point scored that the elbow be at exactly 90 degree angle. To be fair, the Benelong Cup is more a show piece rather than the World Championships.

When umpiring & assisting, I brought up the subject of a couple of players not removing their free arm from in front of their body immediately, and someone else warned other players about low ball toss and the toss not being vertical.

I watched Min Hyung Jee playing at the Australian Nationals this week, very impressive. She's playing for Queensland, she won every singles game she played!

I noticed she was using on pimple on her backhand, so I asked her what it was... she told me TSP Curl P-1R in OX! The way she uses it I thought it was a short pimple with sponge... very impressive!

I searched to see if I could find any videos of here, but I could not find any :( :( :(
