Post subject:  Typical training 1 week before tournament

I’ve got a tournament coming up in a week and I’m wondering if there are specific drills or types of practice others have found helpful in the week or two weeks leading up to a tournament. I’ve been to a few so I know what to expect at the event, just looking for some advice on how to structure my practice, or if I should keep it the same as usual.

There's no specific practice for tournament week just keep it simple play matches with different ppl. How was your tournament did you win?

Thanks for the reply. Heck no I didn’t win! Was just hoping to boost my rank a bit. It was a giant round robin. In the first round, won two lost one (highest rank from group didn’t show up). Since I only had one loss, I was in over my head in round two and took 3 losses. No biggie, still good experience and glad I went. More than 60 players I believe. I’m still a developing player; I just like the tournaments as a chance to have fun, play a bunch of matches and check out some high-level play.

That's the most addictive and fun part!

Probably more emphasis on serve, service receive and honing these skills so that at go to moments in your upcoming matches you have 100% certainty you know what you are trying to achieve and how to do it. Throw in some tactical and thinking work and the rest is keeping things ticking over.

This definitely makes sense. I’ll be playing in another one in January. For my remaining lessons, I’ll be having the coach work with me on serve/receive, match analysis, and a special emphasis on capitalizing on the setups. Doing a great serve which generates a good setup, then missing the shot, is heartbreaking.

Also, for the last one (not the one I wrote about above) I set the wrong alarm and woke up 10 minutes before the event and had to rush all the way, then played like 4 matches back-to-back. At least they didn’t default me, but it was rough having no warmup and showing up already in panic mode. I will not be making this mistake again!

I agree with debater. Focus on service variation, service receive ( reading spin ), 3rd ball and 5th ball attack. Join a lot of tune up games and rest before the big day.
