Maybe it's just me, but what exactly is the difference between legal and illegal gambling?

Like RR said, legal gambling can be taxed by the government. Governments know people will gamble no matter what, why not make some money from it? Having "legal" gambling is supposed to stop "illegal" gambling but it does not. Neither one can stop throwing games, payoffs, etc.

So it's exactly the same with the exception that a government (not necessarily your government) gets a cut.

So basically for us humble players and gamblers there is no real difference between legal and illegal gambling.

It is not that easy. Proceeds from illegal gambling might go to support other more sinister things like drugs, etc.

Very true hookshot, but then again proceeds from legal gambling might go to bombing another country. ;)

Actually in Holland untill last year ALL online betting was illegal unless it was done with the one company that the Dutch government had a contract with.

So even if the ittf has a sponsorcontract with bwin it was illegal to place a bet with them. Stranges rules for a country that promotes a free open market.

In the United States, betting on sports events is illegal in every state except Nevada. Despite this, millions of Americans place $100s of billions in illegal wagers on pro and college sports every year. Football and basketball pointspreads are even printed in major newspapers. These bets are made through illegal bookmakers or offshore online Sportsbooks. Betting on sports here is an extremely prevalent practice and even huge companies allow illegal Super Bowl office pools, for example.

There are some notable exceptions like horseracing and jai alai where one can place legal bets in person.

I believe all online wagering is illegal in the USA, even on ITTF events.

If you read Reisman's book, there are parts in there that would make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Apparently in the 1950s or 60s it wasn't unusual for bookies to openly take bets at the barriers for games during the US Open and US Closed. Reisman would bet on himself, of course. He related, how, during a game, the odds would change as the game progressed. One year he was the clear underdog so he got some really high odds when he bet on himself. As the game progressed the odds swung slowly in his favor, but the odds you got were the odds offered when you made the bet, so he really cleaned up when he won. I've not heard of anything similar to this in connection with today's game but who knows, since betting's moved online.
