Against other more popular sports in Australia, I would say no for all the reasons given by all of the above.

I should have mentioned it all comes down to money at the end. Table Tennis would be the most popular sport if players like Justin Han and William Henzell made ten million a season, then everyone would want to play it

The more I watch tennis (and I've been watching more than I usually do), I think a big part of its popularity is simply the game itself, if that makes any sense. I would have to agree that the size of the ball relative to the size of the court is similar to table tennis and, therefore, not a huge factor against watching table tennis. I would also agree that having star players being paid large sums of money is an important factor.

I think the pace and obvious athleticism of tennis is a huge draw. In table tennis maybe the ball just moves too quickly for the lay audience to appreciate or digest. Maybe the confined space it is played in just doesn't sell the real athleticism that is required. Of course, we know better, but as players we're in the minority. Even basement players have difficulty grasping this because they're usually satisfied just hitting the ball around for a laugh between drinks.

Having said all that, I do think that there is always scope for table tennis to be more popular than it is. It's had a shaky start with so many 'improvements' and alterations, and this can never be good for any sport, especially one that already struggles with its image.

Hey at least we don't have this playing table tennis.

Nothing. Ever.

In answer to the original poster, we have a four point plan to make table tennis more popular.

1. Develop new ways to stop the Chinese.
2. Undermine all competing forms of table tennis, such as hardbat and sandpaper.
3. Make some crazy rule change every few years, for example increasing the ball size again.
4. Ban long pips because our BoD wisely hates them.

Internally we use the anacronym D.U.M.B. when referring to this plan.

Yes we have had great success with our four-point plan, but of course, we could do always better.

I will discuss the plan point-by-point...

Since the Chinese players are so much better than everyone else, we've had our best results by simply banning some of them as we did in the 2012 Olympics. This allowed other countries to pretend like they were good enough to win medals.

Other organizations are presenting derivative table tennis events that are more interesting than ours to watch and also pay more to the players. We are fighting this by implying that they are associated with illegal gambling (even though we have no proof lol).

Our studies have shown that players at all levels love our crazy rule changes. The ball size increases, bans on rubbers, speed glue ban, ban on user tuning, etc., force players to do what they love most, to buy new equipment! It's win/win.

We are making progress toward eradicating long pimples by both bans and rule changes that render them less effective. It is hoped that the new poly ball will be the final nail in the coffin for long pimples.

Actually I appreciate your comment as no one here in our office noticed that our anacronym D.U.M.B. actually spells out "dumb." We take our image very seriously so we'll have to change this.

Adam are you related to Cecil and Roland? Do you have plans on improving color of rubbers from red and black to multicolored? Perhaps a rainbow color rubber will attract more players!

Call me over-sensitive, but I think this is going too far. I know many of us have issues with the ITTF (hey, it's politics, you know), but as Adham is good enough on a number of occasions to contribute to this forum I don't like this kind of demonisation. I suppose I would also have issues with anyone making fun of me or another forum member. I really don't have the authority or breadth of 'forum experience' to make this call, but it just doesn't feel right.

They used to have rabble tennis on television at least once a week on the Tennis Channel, that was the only reason I subscribed to the channel, I haven't seen it in a while, though.
