Post subject:  Table Tennis England New League Ranking System

For those who don't know, last season TTE started a new league website, with a brand new ranking system This ranks everyone playing in any division of a given league. A good idea in theory, but it does have some quirks, maybe down to the newness of the system. https://ttleagues.com/documents/ttleagues_rankings.pdf

I started this season on 1232, and have since played one fixture, where I won all 3 of my matches. For this, my points tally has increased by one. This is because I am playing in a lower division this year (long story, nothing to do with the game). It looks like a good way to lose points, as I only have to lose one match against the wrong opponent and I could drop 13 points. Still, I think it is a step in the right direction.

The major issue is that no meaningful comparisons can be made with other leagues, as starting points last year were allocated on the basis of the number of divisions and of course, the Division in which one played. So, people playing the bottom division were allocated 250 points, the next up 500 points, and so on. In theory, the top division could be 10 levels up, so players would start at 2500. My own league used to have 15 divisions, so you get the idea. However, another league may have only 2 divisions, so the top players only start with 500, no matter how good they may actually be.

The quickest way to rise in the ranks is to play up a division, where a win will earn you a lot more points. Playing down earns you little, but with increased jeopardy.

Not every league is using this new website. But does anyone have any thoughts? Or more informed knowledge about how it will mature?
