Thanks for the great clip Shaolin - I'm a fan too! I think a good case could be put for Guo being the best player ever, not just the best penholder. He won two WTTC singles titles, retired from another final through injury, and inexplicably lost to Kohno in the 1977 final ('friendship' loss?). More than just these results though was the fact that he was just so clearly better than every other player in the world. For some time he just massacred everyone - frequently beating the other top world players under 10 (21 up games) . As good as Waldner and WLQ are/were they never dominated their peers like Guo did.

Also, every aspect of his game was perfect. If you transplanted the circa 1979 Guo to the current day and gave him a little time to develop a RPB I think he would comfortably hold his own.

Yes, Carbonman, GYH is the best in my book but I may be biased as I am a PH.
I've read that he came out of retirement and beat Waldner and Persson when they were at their prime.
Kohno vs. GYH, that day Kohno played very well. Great player beating Bengtsson and GYH!
A GYH at his prime + today's rubber + a bit of RPB would be the ultimate PH today! Move over Ma Lin, Wang Hao, and XX!

I knew that Guo beat Waldner once (I think in Bundesliga or something like that) around 84ish(?) but I recently read that Waldners record against Guo is 0-2 so they may have played twice. I didn't know Guo had played Persson but of course he may well have. You probably know this but apparently both Waldner and Persson have said that Guo was the greatest ever.

Fans of Kim Taek Soo would at least slightly object. At least BTY (not so much KTS) makes a killing selling the J-pen blade for a rediculous prices that Koreans and others are more than willing to fork over.

Is he playing Friendship rubber?

I'm pretty sure he used the old purplish friendship rubber. Someone once told me at the time that many of the Chinese used the Friendship topsheet and put it on Japanese sponge such as Mark V sponge. Not 100% sure if this is true and even if it was I'm not sure if Guo did it.

GYH is very very good, but how about Liu Guoliang and Ma Lin?

They were great players but did not/do not dominate their peers in the same way Guo did. Guo wasn't just better than everyone else, he was miles better. The most you could say about Liu Guoliang and Ma Lin is that in their prime they were 'the best amongst equals'.

It looked like the old Friendship rubber I used. I loved the long pips from that series combined with the super sticky inverted.

You are absolutely right, STT. I have watched GYH video, inclusive the one in this post of yours. I enjoyed them a lot.

Actually 5 to 7 years years ago, he came on quite a regular basis for TT clinic held at a local University college here. I had the opportunity to have a discussion with him. Found him still dynamic when it comes to TT, though he already retired from TT for some years.

I'm not in any position to make judgments about his greatness, but I would say that (from the little I've seen) KTS had the best/purest penhold backhand I've ever seen.

GTH is known for his brilliant FH side looping. Watch ShaolinTT video and you will see this. He moved fast to his left with fantastic footwork and did the side FH loop instead of FH stroke as most player would do under the situation. If one watches his earlier games, such display could be seen very often. He actually demonstrated the way for other players of China in this technique.
