tOD

I am not sure which rubber. Friendship FX? DHS PF4? These are considered "slow rubbers" today. I wonder what he could do with his FH with today's rubber.

GTH is known for his brilliant FH side looping. Watch ShaolinTT video and you will see this. He moved fast to his left with fantastic footwork and did the side FH loop instead of FH stroke as most player would do under the situation. If one watches his earlier games, such display could be seen very often. He actually demonstrated the way for other players of China in this technique.

Yes, his technique was very modern, ahead of his time: CPen with INVERTED rubber, he looped EVERYTHING. I am guessing Ma Lin's FH was probably inspired by GYH.

Fans of Kim Taek Soo would at least slightly object.

I'm not in any position to make judgments about his greatness, but I would say that (from the little I've seen) KTS had the best/purest penhold backhand I've ever seen.

It's a joy watching KTS! Great player and great coach. One of the few PH players who could attack well with traditional BH.

Many thanks to pingpongstadiums8 for posting a few Guo's matches on youtube recently.
Here is one of the them.

Just finished watching the 1983 clip, and it's left me wondering: 21 point games, 38mm balls, rubbers nothing like today's super spinny inverteds, but... still looks like lots of looping and third ball attacks to me. :^)

1983 WTTC semifinal, two of the greatest (PH) players battling.
Guo Yuehua vs. Jiang Jialiang, with Guo winning in the 5th and final game.

1979 World Championship men's final: Ono vs Guo

Wow! Great find, Ed, I've been looking for a copy of that match forever! So sad that Guo had to retire-but Ono was playing really well, even if Guo had been instructed to dump, which is a distinct possibility.
There isn't a link to the '81 Final anywhere, I suppose?

Great stuff thanks Shaolin!

Did you read in this interview - http://www.mhtabletennis.com/2014/08/eu ... -mhtt.html - that Korbel named Guo first when asked which players he has the most respect for over the years?

Hey Carbonman, it's no surprise really, a lot of the players I have interviewed or talked to have mentioned him as one of the real greats of the sport along with Waldner :)

I like that stutter serve. You can hit the ball the first time or the second time, feint with the first stroke, hit the ball with the advancing stroke or the retreating one (gives topspin).. I guess this went away when people started hiding serves.

Great match between two world champions: Guo Yuehua vs Jiang Jialiang.

Great to see that game, Shaolin; I've only seen a few shots from it before and it's a famous match. Guo was lucky, Jiang was right with him until the last four points.

Those two probably vie for the best PH spot with KTS, at least until Xu Xin came along...

Mitsuru KOHNO 72 y.o. displays his mastery to the full. The Japanese legend of table tennis. He is now enjoying eye lenses of soft Silica instead of solid glasses.

Hard to believe that's Kohno ... he used to be so serious when playing, and always smoothing his fringe out of his eyes. No fringe now....And no specs.
And most amazingly, he looks better as a player now than in his prime.

Great player, but I don't know if that's Mitsuru Kohno.
Here is Mitsuru Kohno (河野 満) a few years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oNeN8kj52w
