Just looking at his games again, I'm amazed by the backspin he gets off of pushes. He's ripping through the ball with a super flat racket angle, so that even his pushes are scary to loop! Plus every now & then he pushes with less spin, and they loop it off the table. I guess it goes to show just how important pushing is for choppers

In the professional world the no spin pushes yield a lot of points since people are used to attacking balls with speed and with some kind of spin .They tend to put too much force on the ball and off it goes from the table .

This is true not only for defenders; very intelligent loopers do this successfully..... you can apply this principle to your games and you will see how they will make mistakes at some point in the game . :)

In Shang Kun match video, when it closes up, his short pip sponge seems thicker than a 1,4 -1,7 mm. sponge...it seems almost as thick as his fh rubber..May be it is 1,7- 1,9 mm. short pips. This is faster than a 1.5 mm. sponge and easy to produce more spin...
Any information about it?

I think somewhere buried in this thread someone said they held his racket & it was the standard spectol in 1.8mm... If I find it, I'll quote it here

Nice practice clip:

I used Spectol 1,5 mm for a whole session yesterday for defending - very nice. Actually a lott better than I remembered, but it was like 7 yeras ago I last used it. So the ABS-ball makes defending with SP a lot easier I guess. I might actually keep this setup for awhile 8)

This was new to me, t illustrates how difficult it is to read Hou's spin on pushes (opponemnt is Sun Jian Fei, he has his own thread here, uses LP ox on BH):

About his blade and rubbers (but he uses 1.8 mm Spectol, not 1.3mm).

Anyone know what thickness of sponge he's using in the Victas S1? He apparently used 1.8mm on his TSP Spectol but they don't seem to do that thickness in the Victas version - 1.6mm or 2.0mm.

I don't think he needs to buy regular thicknesses or regular sponges. He surely has got a custom made version.

Aye, true. He probably has them made to a specific weight each time too.
