I think it's too late for that and IMO he doesn't have the technique or the consistency for it. I honestly think he would have more success as a double inverted players than a pure modern defender. I think he needs to find something that works for him at the table where he can use his speed and be aggressive and he can't be pushed back as frequently and as easily as he is now if he want to go any further.

My two cents.

Yes, but there must be a reason he went away from 2x inverted in the first place. So it may not be viable for him to go back there (assuming he used it before he went pips).

Fabian is also compting doubles. He and Mattias Översjö just beat Gao Ning and Yang Zi, that match was filmed.

The match vs Kara shows some improvement. Yes he lost but this opponent is a real lp-killer. Fabian is getting better with his defense and I can see some consistency compared to the years before. You shouldn´t expect him to chop like JSH. That has never been his game. He tries to stay as close as possible to the table wich is difficult with lp. Only Anti allows you to stay closer but I don´t think he is planning such basic change. I like his game. I think people here expect too much of him. He used to be successful cadet player in Europe. That´s long ago and it´s surely been hard enough to find a way to succeed after flp ban. Now Fabian is playing in Sweden´s top league. A good performance he can be proud of.

In this match against Kara Fab was beated mostly on the FH side, which worked badly both in defence and offence. I have seen Fab attacking 70 % from his FH side against some players, but now that was gone. Maybe Kara was just too good, but to be succesful in higher level, you just have to be able to counter effective from the FH.

Lot of times Fab's BH worked surprisingly beautifully, even from distance, althought towards the end of game Kara figured out the spin.

When Kara loses against good off players, they usually make Kara run with their FH attacks and Kara's lack of mobillity becomes an issue.

This LIANG Jingkun/YAN An vs AKERSTROM Fabian/OVERSJO Mattias (Pre) was actually great match, as Yan an is ranked number 13.

Pips did their magic!

Regarding his equipment, I just confirmed with him that he's using "Stiga Carbo Oversize and I still use Dornenglanz OX".

Thanks Haggisv! He's probably got a small sponsorship deal with Stiga then.

Pretty darn good effort! There was a chop-block in the second set that Liang literally looped on his own half, that always puts a smile on my face hehe. They make up a really good doubles pair, Översjö is very good away from the table which is probably necessary when playing with Fabian.

Full match: http://cdn.laola1.tv/ittf/iframe/player ... YAN_An_CHN

vs Gao Ning and Yang Zi: http://cdn.laola1.tv/ittf/iframe/player ... attias_SWE

Looks like he is getting better reversal.

I agree with this analysis. Fabian had difficulties dealing with Karasevic's loops from his BH-side to Fabian's FH-side. Since Karesevic is left-handed, the spin on these balls is unusual.

What a great doubles game from Fabian Akerstrom & Oversjo!

Fab's pips was the hero of the match! It's nice to see that pips work in top level level doubles as well with 1900 rated players!

Zhiwen served spinny, Fab returned and the spin was too difficult for Machado to handle.

Zhiwen and Machado seemed to mumble something to each other trought the whole match - I think it's just better to concentrate on playing and less on talking.

In 10 minutes they go up against Fang Bo and Xu Xin, now that's a real test. Xu Xin is usually very good at handling pips.
