If it's a gas bubble (air or voc fumes) then you can deflate it with a very small syringe needle with no deformity to the top sheet. I work in a hospital so I have many needles and syringes available, and using an insulin syringe is the best because the needle is very small. Likely you know a diabetic and might be able to score one from them (an unused one please).

It's better than a plain needle because you can draw back the plunger on the syringe and it creates a vacuum where the bubble was. The negative pressure often "repairs" any stretching that may have occurred from the bubbling. It's really pretty cool to see... try it. I got the idea during a wound debridement procedure, we sometimes use a needle on blisters for wound culturing...goes perfectly flat.

(Side note: never attempt to drain a blister yourself, always let your body take care of it or go to a professional if you must)

I find it easier to iron with the topsheet up. But it really depends on which side you intend to keep. Takes longer to iron through the sponge. I haven't had any damages either way, but make sure the bond is softened enough before peeling or you will get the stretching or even ripping problem. Warning, some rubbers (ESP ESN inverted) are VERY hard to separate.
