Post subject:  Repairing a rubber pips sheet
How to get a mp coversheet pips rubber back to good shape? I used a product that unglued the sponge from the topsheet but it was not resting flat so it created 3 big bubbles that doesn't come back. What should i try?

You have overstretched it. Ignore it if not too big, should still glue flat. If not, get a new sheet.

If you just did the removal, you might have to give the topsheet time to return to normal, usually with the solvents I have used, the expansion is temporary and the topsheet will mostly return to normal if you just give it some time for the solvent to evaporate. The amount of time needed will vary depending on how much you needed to use to get the sheets to separate.

I think that the solvant expand the rubber with the gravity and create this bubble. ( in reverse) I didn't check today but its already 3 days.

Once VOCs cause bubbling/deforming of a topsheet it never goes back to being flat. Trash it, and next time use heat from either boiling water or a steam iron to carefully separate sponge from topsheet. Posts elsewhere on this site describe these processes in more detail.

What were you trying to do in the first place? :lol: If there is air trapped under the topsheet try pricking with a pin to let it out.

Just tried to separate the top sheet from the sponge.

I tried a 2nd time with an other rubber. I put my solution in a large bowl and drop the rubber, sponge face down. I did put a cover. 15 minutes later I separate the sponge from the top sheet. No sweat. I will try my Agressor now OX today. The flat bowl with a cover make the sponge to absorb the solution and dissolved the glue.

^Goo gone^. black and yellow bottle with citrus fragrance. I sprayed the sponge side and then spray the recipient and put the rubber with the sponge facing the solution. The solution doesn't cover the coversheet at all. I didn't try to cover all the rubber, (the coversheeet and the sponge) as I didn't know if it would damage my coversheeet) I put a cover on top of the recipient to try to get the vapor entering the coversheet. I believe more you leave it there, more easy it will become. I leave it about 15 minutes and took about 10 minutes to get rid of the sponge. The sponge is not good anymore as it come off in pieces. I used only my finger. No nail almost. The coversheet is intact. No bubbles, no ripple, or damage of any kind. I glue it easily to the blade after that.

Ah... Doesn't that contain D-Limonene? This was a component of the old VOC speed glues.. no wonder the topsheet expanded!

Wow.. mix this with some rubber cement and it IS speed glue.

Next time, just put the rubber under a towel and iron it (high steam). Much safer.

I don't play official tournament. So it doesn't matter for me.

For the ironning what side the rubber need to be ?

I find it easier to iron with the topsheet up. But it really depends on which side you intend to keep. Takes longer to iron through the sponge. I haven't had any damages either way, but make sure the bond is softened enough before peeling or you will get the stretching or even ripping problem. Warning, some rubbers (ESP ESN inverted) are VERY hard to separate.

If it's a gas bubble (air or voc fumes) then you can deflate it with a very small syringe needle with no deformity to the top sheet. I work in a hospital so I have many needles and syringes available, and using an insulin syringe is the best because the needle is very small. Likely you know a diabetic and might be able to score one from them (an unused one please).

It's better than a plain needle because you can draw back the plunger on the syringe and it creates a vacuum where the bubble was. The negative pressure often "repairs" any stretching that may have occurred from the bubbling. It's really pretty cool to see... try it. I got the idea during a wound debridement procedure, we sometimes use a needle on blisters for wound culturing...goes perfectly flat.

(Side note: never attempt to drain a blister yourself, always let your body take care of it or go to a professional if you must)
