I think most of us intuitively understand a medium pip to be a rubber with pimple properties somewhere in between short and long pips, and similarly with pip length to be somewhere between the two. The ITTF does not define medium pips in their "approved rubber list", even though the term is commonly accepted.

So it would be worthwhile for us to generate a list of all the medium pip rubbers, so that we all know we're posting in the right section. Hopefully someone knows of such a list already, and can post it here, or otherwise we can go through the list and identify them brand by brand...

BTW "noppen-test" (major German pimple site, cheers MNNB!) defines medium pips as having a length between 0.8 and 1.4mm (aspect ratio: 0.8-0.9). Are we happy to accept this for our forum as well?

Medium pips are a very specialized classification of pips in the gray zone between long pips and short pips. If you want some of the disruptive effects of long pips combined with the attacking ability of short pips, these pips may be a category to consider.

That's great, thanks MNNB! Several of the top ladies in AU use medium pips on their BH... 563 is common... They use it just like a short pip, and from watching their matches, they win a lot of point with it, partcularly during fast counthit/blovk ralleys... the reversal and change in pace really disrupts the rythm..

While the dimensions of the thing make it a short pip, I think Stiga Radical plays quite a bit like a medium pip.

I recently came across someone using the Bomb Hammer pimple. I think its classified as a short pimple, though while playing against it and using for a short while if did have some wobble and strange effects. I dont know the dimensions of it but would perhaps classify this as a medium pimple.

I guess that is a question in itself... do we classifiy it as a medium pip because of
(1) it's dimensions, or
(2) it's playing properties.

I would lean towards (1), coz (2) is too subjective...

Once in a tournament before i played a match, someone told me that my next opponent (a penholder) was a medium pips hitter. When we started, i didn't look at his racket. He beat me. Then i looked at his racket - globe 889, which i had both played against and used myself in the past, and was not at all a medium pip. I played him at another tournament and beat him easily. This was many years ago and people still tell me that he's using medium pips. Yet of another guy who has the exact same rubber but using them differently, they say he's using short pips.

Anyway, i recommend defining medium pips by using physical properties only. A given player can take a sheet of medium pips and use them as if they were long pips, but that doesn't make them long pips.

TSP curl p-2 belongs on the list.

But I would agree in #1, because that is precisely the idea behind classifying 'short', 'medium', and 'long' pips.

We could put in the the description of the rubber, 'plays similar to' when addressing pips which have borderline characteristics.

I know what you mean. It took some serious searching to find these sites that sell TSP Curl P-2.

These companies carry the TSP Curl P-2 in ox, 1.0, 1.5mm.

Robbins Sports - you have to call them to order their Curl P-2; you can't order directly from the website; they only have black.

This is a very versatile rubber, and I in my opinion, it plays like a medium pips rubber, not a long pips rubber.
You can get some reversal with a chop block; you can also easily counter drive and hit with it; I have recently discovered that I can also chop with it. When I twiddle, it is not too difficult to use but can give a very troublesome ball to my opponents. I found many long pipped rubbers to be much harder to control - for my blocking (not push blocking) and counter driving style.
I use it and I like it a lot.

I have tended to think .....

1 mm long = short pip
1.1 mm long = longer short pip
1.2 to 1.4 mm long = medium pip (is 1.4 mm border line long pimple ?)
1.5 mm plus long = long pip

Aspect ratio must come into play but it never sticks in me head.

Kagin, that's a great point, the list needs to be defined by the properties of the rubber purely, as players can use them as short or long, or a combination of those styles.

The P-2 has been discontinued by TSP before, although they brought it back in their next catalogue, but it's gone again in their latest one... This would make me hesitant to recommend anyone to start using it...
