Hi,

I just bought my Nittaku ViolinCello and based from Nittaku it's a Def+. The blade is heavy by its own plus the weight of the rubber.

I know this is subjective and really differs on the players preference, but is there a rule of thumb that for a defensive blades a thinner rubbers are highly recommended?

Please share your thoughts...

IMHO: The only reason for having a thin inverted would be if you chop with it. Personally I prefer max sponge as I quite often loop from mid to long distance. I'd rather twiddle to my LP if I'm forced to chop with my FH.

Martin has a good suggestion if you play against people who are capable and willing to attack a lot. Otherwise you will still be at the table pushing a lot, where a slower and thin rubber is helpful for control and minimizing mistakes.

I play max inverted on all my blades.

Yes, the blade is heavy but you have pips on the other side and they are light! They balance things out.

For example my blades are usually at least 94-95g ... plus 50-53g for the cut inverted rubber. Pips are 25-27g. Plus some glue and edge tape, let's say another 7-8g. All in all, a nice balanced 180-185g DEF racket. You don't want to have a DEF setup that's too light (IMHO). You want stability and predictability in your chops from mid-distance yet power for when you have one shot to end the point (if this is your game)

I just notice or maybe its only me that my consistency is higher when i use a thinner rubber on my forehand...or maybe its because of my stroke. I do thicker contact with the ball rather than brushing it...will it defy the real purpose of having a def blade if that is my case?

One thing to consider is that Fastarc G-1 isn’t the easiest rubber on the planet to play with. It’s quite hard to counter loop with as the top sheet is quite thick and spin sensitive in those type of situations.
