Hi folks

I've recently embarked on my journey of SP chopping with a BTY Innerforce ZLC blade and 1.3mm Spectol.

I'm probably going to move up to a ~1.7mm Spectol (or whatever I can get), but I'm not sure what blade to use.

I don't think I want an oversized head. I find them a bit cumbersome. I don't think I want a defensive blade, either. I'm managing with the Innerforce, but it feels a touch light and its flared handle is giving me some (very minor) discomfort.

Does anyone have any experience of SP chopping with a thicker sponge on "normal" ~OFF ish blades? What should I be looking for? I know the traditional Chinese SP choppers typically use 7 wooden ply blades (like DHS Hurricane 08B) but that doesn't necessarily mean it would be the best option for me. If it is though, what blade could I try which might be similar to the old 08B?

TIA

Why not go with something that the pros use? Lookup what Sato, Yingchao etc uses.

I've personally tried Spectol 1.0 and it was a disaster on both the DMZ Wizard and the VKM but pretty good with a normal ALL+ allwood blade (it may have been the Grubba but it was 1+ year ago).

Joo se hyuk, diode, koji offensive are all fairly popular for SP choppers.

I think they tend to favor faster, stiffer blades. But they're also very skilled!

I would base it on how much you actually chop vs block/hit using the SP.

HYC uses the Hurricane 08B. I'd happily try one of those, but you can't get them. In fact I think the version he used was from the early 90s.

Sato uses the Goriki Danshi allegedly. I was looking at those earlier. I'd certainly give them a try but a) they're really expensive for something that might not suit my game and b) they're still an oversized head.

Yeah I won't be blocking at all. I'll be using the blade for BH/FH chops and FH loops.

I love my JSH. I have 4 of them. I don't want an oversized head for the SPs though. I don't know why, I just feel like I get more racket head speed with the smaller blades.

I tried do get as close to Hou's setup as I could without buying ancient blades. So I got a DHS Classic 08X with lots of basswood and some carbon. It is more like an allround blade but very good control and still enough speed for loopkills. It works great for chopping both with Spectol 1,8 mm and RITC 802 1,5 mm (orange sponge). Especially 802 feels gon on this blade. But, it is only available with flared handle and it is oversized. But it is cheaper than BTY or Victas and Ma Te uses it 8) . https://www.tabletennis11.com/other_eng/dhs-classic-08x

Thanks DA. The Classic 08X is certainly a blade I've been considering. Not too expensive either, but I didn't realise it was oversized. Do you happen to know what size its head is? I've just had a quick Google and can't find anything.

My current blade is 158mm x 151mm
JSH is 165mm x 152mm
Nittaku Goriki Super Drive is 160mm x 154mm

Maybe I should just cut down my JSH... but I have no idea how to do that and frankly I am not known for my DIY skills

Hitting area is about 155 mm wide, 164 mm tall
JSH is out of production, you can't buy it and there are many others who wants that blade, so don't cut it down. Go for a Diode in that case. And also, a blade cut down will probably get faster.

Dunc, I have no idea what blade to suggest-my 1 plus year trial to chop with my FH was basically a failure; but I do know how you feel about a regular vs oversized head. I am trying some things similar to you, but using LP with sponge. I much prefer a regular size blade. Best blade for me is a discontinued 729 Hao Shao champion 2 speed blade with a carbon on the FH. I also have a new Juic Duo blade that plays well 1-2 meters off that table. One last blade is sword's yokohama yue. I have some of the older ones and a newer yokohama yue I got from eacheng. Work pretty well for this style.

The last two training sessions I am back to my April-May setup. DHS Classic 08X with 1.5 mm RITC 802 orange sponge on BH and Yinhe Jupiter II max 40 degrees sponge on FH. This is s great setup for allround strategy play where I can choose too play defensive away from the table, pushing game at the table, blocking game at the table or a more ordinary offensive game. This blade gives me so much confidence. It has a nice feeling with lots of control and nice speed when you put some force (muscle force, not jedi) behind it. My blade is among the lightest I guess, 83 gram.

I am using a Lin Yun Ju blade with 1.2mm Spectol on BH and 1.9 mm Dignics 64 FH. I think mine is too fast and my chop doesn't produce much underspin so I only chop when I am forced to be away from the table.
