I have been testing a thick off balsa blade for chopping with Degu II in 1 .5 and I must say I am impressed.

Anyone who has had a similar experience? Chops are really fast and low with heavy underpin

I also found that I can create heavy underspin. However I play with long pips, not short pips. Not sure if it works in the same way for both OX or sponged rubbers.

Going to test my Joola R1 with both short pips( 1.5) and long pips (0.5).I am sure it will send heavy backspin both wings. The key is NOT heavy backspin, which of course R1 will be capable of , but , rather, consistency.

For a blade like R1 I will be using Marder in 1.0 , the blade is very fast, adds spin and Marder will help to control both the pips and the blade for sure.Just need to know the level of consistency. With this new ball the search for more spin on chops is paramount. The blade is the most important TT material in this new era IMO.

Loads of underspin when chopping with ox lp on the tsp balsa with fibreglass blades certainly
On the slower ones,I can chop with ox on carbon blades with substantial enough Limba outer ply ,this is great further away from the table

Been testing R1 with Degu II in 1.5.Heavy ,speedy underspin but I don't know the level of consistency in a real match yet .However, it is promising!

As for long pips,I tested GD long in 0.5.R1 does not chop consistently , does not grip the ball ok,..... maybe, a very slow pip like Spinlord Stachelfeuer in 1.0 could do the trick .

I have played for a long time with the TSP Balsa 3.5 (balsa/fiberglass) and Spectol 21 (1.9 and 2.15mm) on BH and it's a fantastic combo for chopping.
One great thing that balsa brings is the ability to block and hit very well with SP. It hasn't been the case with all the Def blades I tested.

Hi Sami,

I have built last year (during the pandemic boredom) a few combi blades especially for LP and OX LP.
You can see them here (the 1st model, the Combi XDef): https://ooakforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=33591&start=45#p394067

They are thick fast balsa core blades. And I am searching for somebody interested in testing. Interested?

Could I try blade for defensive push blocker close to the table?

I am shocked at the answers. Every balsa blade I have used has been far too fast to chop with. Must be me.

Slow yes, thin can be if combined with others woods, flex not good to chop-block close to the table.
