Galaxy J-1 one-ply ayous blade

Image

One of the more unique offerings from Galaxy. Rated ALL in terms of blade speed.

Image

Well-crafted blade with a rather thick handle. 10mm worth of blade wood usually does that. As a natural product, weight varies, more so with this thick single ply. This particular sample was 95g, but was well-balanced.

Image

First impression is that it has rather a medium-soft/medium feel. Unlike what's said of hinoki which 'spits' out the rubber, this ayous blade is very linear. I would probably say yes, it's a good choice for (a counterdriver) wood blade. Or perhaps someone who looks for fine chopping or blocking touch at the expense of rebound speed.

Speed is rather indeed in the ALL range; being heavy probably puts it in the ALL+ range. Excellent for close to table players, but might need some help using faster rubbers when used as a long distance chopping blade.

Loop-driving with it tends to be rather good physical exercise, as the blade doesn't help very much even when hit through. Excellent looping feel though, with muted vibrations. Slow looping is good.

Pairing it up with a sheet of 802-40 on Reactor sponge resulted in a rather easy-to-use short pip backhand. Counterhitting was rather sublime, rewarding good hitting with excellent pace and controlled feel.

Might be close to: Avalox P500 (OFF- to OFF), albeit a lot slower and thicker, without the catapulting/flex feel when hit through hard.

edit: Update!

It has medium-sharp ball feel coupled with lots of flex. Speed is still about ALL. Not much catapult. Still is very recommended for controlled play.

Thank for the review Yuzuki!

Interesting, it didn't feel that slow to me, especailly when you bounce the ball on the blade a little harder, it seemed to have a good kick... Still I have not tried it with rubbers on...

Perhaps it's the initial tack of the venus, that has not quite worn off, and is slowing it down...

Perhaps there's some residual tack left, but I reckon that I was comparing it's speed with the faster ones (Avalox P500, Mazunov, Primorac Carbon, Schlager Carbon).

Comparing it with those, I would think it's quite accurate...

I would think it'll mate well with JO Platin if I'm looking for a fast forehand; My idea of fast is Platin on SC.

Here's to a bit of correction: Venus on J-1 has acceptable (classic rubber class) speed on the J-1, pretty neat actually. Must have been the tack indeed!

Better get some action videos in for a good comparison. What camera angle do you guys suggest so that I'll be able to demonstrate the speed? Perhaps a bit to the side of the table perhaps?

Thinking of purchasing this blade. Does this work well with long pips?

Haven't personally tried, really. If you've looking for a hard feel, this isn't it, but if you're looking for some dwell on your pips, it could work.

Add: I have a used sheet of Pronte lying around, so I slapped it on this blade.

Oddly enough, it feels and seems that the throw is lower, for blocking, driving, and looping. I can't determine whether the Pronte I'm using has a worn topsheet or it's really the blade, so I'll transfer my Tenergy on this and give it a go.

Tried it with FS 837 - absolutely impossible... much too fast and not to control...

Kokutaku Tuple 911 was pretty nice on this one - easy to control and still nice near table!

Both played ox!

Benny

PS: 95g is still on the "light side" there are some about 110g... mine had 93g

Got mine last month, been using it for two weeks, paired up with RITC 729 08 ES. Controlled looping is a jiff, defensive blocking as well, one thing it can't handle in my opinion is high speed play even mid distance something can go wrong, like it's not consistent at high speeds once u turn up the gear a notch, even chopping have that random bounce if done even a little power added.

All in all, a good blade to practice defensive side of your game or even chopping and placement of ball, for competetive play, not so much.

Anyone used this recently / still available?
What rubbers would be suitable for this blade?
Thanks
