AK47's been around for a while. I'll have to go look - is this a new variation? Iskandar |

Few years ago I had AK47 (made in Japan) in black package. Very similar to T64. AK47 in Yellow package (picture above) was poor. Slow, sticky, very hard. After two sessions great bubble in the middle.... When hardness (Red) is the same scale like Blitz, 45-47° will be middle hard rubber. We will see. One pair si on the way.... |

I think those are Chinese degrees. 45-47 degrees is rock-hard. Iskandar |

https://www.facebook.com/palio.gp Interesting - lots of new packaging for old favorites, and a new Tensor (Aeolus). Also new 3 ply Hinoki blades. Iskandar |

Aeolus is a great rubber. Like a modified Vega Japan with harder topsheet, faster. |

My sheet of AK47 Blue (38-40 degree) arrived this week. I'll be giving it a try next week. The visuals are really good. The topsheet looks like the same old AK47 mold was used but the end result is different. Totally non-tacky but big grip during a finger test. It has a shiny finish, and is incredibly thin. There was no protective sheet on there, just a random bit of paper (feels like grease proof paper for some reason). Looks good quality. The sponge looks excellent - modern porous type, no blemishes anywhere, quite soft. Baby blue in colour, no tuning layer, slight smell of "eu de cheapy chinese rubber". At first glance the whole rubber could easily be mistaken for a sheet of Airoc - similar sponge colour, same shiny topsheet effect. It won't be anywhere near as fast (I guess) but the sponge looks like it would be very receptive to oily boosters, if you're into such things (if the topsheet can take the strain). Oh, and quite light (by modern standards) at 54.38g uncut (168x168 sheet). |

That is light. It'd be interesting to compare with KTL Green Dragon in terms of topsheet thickness. If it's the same topsheet as the older AK47, the old topsheet should be just as thin, but then again... who knows?? It'd be interesting to compare the pips side of the topsheet to see if there were any changes made (if there were it'd technically be a bad thing vis-à-vis ITTF's certification). Interesting that it's non-tacky and without a topsheet film protector - this would be very un-Palio-like, which would make this rubber something akin to Big Dipper (which is likewise non-tacky, without a protector film, AND not vacuum-packed, totally unlike other Yinhe sheets). This one isn't vacuum packed either, I take it? Seems like it might be a trend - a cynic would say it's "Tensor-mimicry". It is my belief that the topsheet "protector" isn't really there to protect the rubber - it's what makes a tacky topsheet tacky. It's got adhesive on it, which transfers over to the topsheet and gives it tackiness. The adhesive wears off over time, which is why tacky rubbers become less tacky. It's also why companies can get away with making tacky and non-tacky versions of the same topsheet (e.g. Sanwei A+) - it's the application of this "protector sheet" that makes it tacky. And there's more than one "protector sheet" in use - some impart very high stickiness, some a lot less of it (e.g. "Yasaka" - actually Palio - ZAP). Interesting that Aeolus isn't available on Eacheng - maybe it's a Euro-only thing, even though Thor's, Macro Pro and Macro Era are all available via Eacheng. Iskandar |

AndySmith wrote: Aeolus is a great rubber. Like a modified Vega Japan with harder topsheet, faster. Interesting. Looks like Aeolus has a Rasant-ish big pore sponge, which is orange. Also interesting: http://ttnpp.com/store/99-german-style ttnpp's apparently able to get stuff that isn't on the general Chinese market. Cheapest Tensors available I think (typical Tensor from tabletennis11 is almost EUR40). Though you have to add shipping - typically $5.50 for the first rubber and another $1.50 for each subsequent sheet. I wonder if there's a "Palio Tensor" roundup somewhere online. I suspect there's little to choose between them, just as there's little to choose between a lot of rubber sheets. Iskandar |

The AK47 sheets? Given the price, I think they are. Iskandar |

It doesn't say anywhere on the packet where it was made, but yeah - the price is keen, so you'd have to say China. Some recent Chinese rubbers have been super high quality. They've definitely raised their game. |
