Do you think a game with OX long pimples, for a close to the table style blocking game, has a future?

That's an interesting one! In the ladies' competition much more pimple players have that 'short to the table'-style (not always in Ox though). How comes?

Male ox-players (or those with thinly sponged pips, f.e Koji Matsushita) mostly play a combination of long distance chopping with a short game (f.e. Jian Fei Sun). That's also the style I prefer (albeit on much much lower level of course).

Maybe the difference male-female pimple style has to do with a difference in (looping) power?

I have two questions.

1. I am 55 years old, and recently returned to playing table tennis after being away from our sport for 25 years. I did play at a reasonably high level, as I did compete in the 1975 World Table Tennis Championships. Bad injuries kept me away from table tennis, but now I am fine. As others have written, your style of playing table tennis is very inspiring. In the past, I played classical defense, somewhat in the style of Norio Takashima, but would now like to play modern defense, modeling my game after your style, but of course at a much lower level. My question is whether or not you have seen anyone else my age playing Joo Sehyuk style table tennis.

2. Does being one of the top players in the world make it difficult to appreciate the simple joy of playing table tennis? The way that you play table tennis is incredibly beautiful to watch. What does it feel like emotionally to play table tennis like you? How does if feel when you chop loops, drives, and kills, or when you counter-attack from a distance to win a point? When I was younger, and played competitively, I would rarely think about the simple joy of playing table tennis. Now that I am much older, playing defensive table tennis is more enjoyable than it ever was in the past.

Thanks so much,

Steven

birding, the 1975 Worlds was very famous. Amongst other things it inspired a whole generation to try to play like Jonyer. Also, it was pretty much saw the birth of LP on the world stage when Lu Yuan Sheng used it to defeat Surbek. I would love to read some of your impressions of the event if you would like to relate them. cheers.

I started this thread a few months ago after Joo Saehyuk’s rensponding to our get well wishes (see viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20449). We collected some great material. I then contacted Birding&table.tennis (former player of the Canadian national table tennis team) who braught us into contact with Joo through the Korean Table Tennis association and who also received Joo’s beautiful response. Together, Birding and myself worked on the existing questions (compiling, changing, adding, writing an introduction) and, in the name of the OOAK-forum, we send our final result to the Korean Table Tennis Association.

Yesterday, we got an e-mail from this association confirming that they have received our request for the interview and will send it, with the interview questions, to Joo Saehyuk. Because Joo is competing in China right now, our contact person wasn’t sure when exactly we could expect an answer to our request but I think we can be sure that it will reach Joo Saehyuk and I’m also pretty confident that he will respond to it.

I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed to the interview and especially Birding&table.tennis for the great cooperation and the contacting opportunities.

We are excited about what might happen in the near furture… it sure looks encouraging!

Pipsy gave a great description about our effort toward interviewing Joo Saehyuk. (I'd also like to thank everyone for their great questions, and my old teammate, Adham Sharara, who has been very helpful too.) I was very encouraged by the response yesterday from the Korean Table Tennis Association. Our contact person from the Korean Table Tennis Association does indeed anticipate that Joo Saehyuk will respond to our questions. That will be of course be very exciting. So, I'll be be anxiously checking my email every morning (the Korean time zone is 14 hours ahead of the eastern US) until I hear from Joo Saehyuk.

As Pipsy writes, it sure looks to be very encouraging.

Steven

We are almost there...

Birding&table.tennis received a forwarded mail from Joo Se Hyuk to the Korean Table Tennis association containing a file with Joo Se Hyuk's answers to our questions :D

Unfortunately, the file could not be opened, neither by us, neither by our contact from Korean TT association.

Joo has replied he will send a new file as soon as possible...

So let's all keep our fingers crossed and look forward to it
