I think that if you can find a really thin (0.1-0.2mm) very hard/very dead sponge, perhaps. The issue was finding it. All sponge, even dead sponge has catapult and dwell. The cardboard is harder than very hard sponge, and more ox-like. It’s kind of in-between the 2. I think I still want to try the 3 glue sheets method tho. Pain in the ***

Ah...yeah. Thanks. kaesees you're not being a PIA because I thought the same thing. I actually tried this in the past with DG. I know DG is a different rubber, but it has some similarities to Dtecs. I tried a P4 sponge, I tried a P-1R sponge, and I tried a 0.5 Dawei 388 sponge. I'd consider those slow and dead, but they all added quite a bit more dwell or grip than I wanted. The cardboard trick, really keeps an OX feel while slowing it down a little. It's a different feeling, and you'd have to try it to get it. I imagine the 3 glue sheets would feel different still. Also, it's so very hard to find a sponge less than 0.5mm that fits the bill, but cardboard or glue sheets I imagine are probably around 0.1-0.2mm. I really liked it... |

I meant that the process of gluing a topsheet to a sponge is a PIA :V But in any case, thank you for posting about your experiences. |

If it's pips, no problem. Inverted top sheets are another story. Here's what I do. I glue the sponge to the blade I'll be using...let dry. Then I use RC on the other side of the sponge...let dry completely. Then I put water based glue on the pips (so no curling). Let dry completely. Using a sheet of transparency film (like they use for overhead projectors...best option) or a glossy piece of cardboard place the pips with dried glue sticky side down, but with a 1/2 inch or 1.5 cm hanging off the end of the transparency sheet. Press the part hanging off the end onto the bottom edge of the sponge. You can line it up perfectly. Then slowly move the transparency sheet and work your way upward and press down as you go. (after some practice, I now just take off the transparency sheet and let gravity do the work. Press them down/roll and then cut. The transparency film/hang off method (for lack of a better title) works well for already cut pips you need to line up to a paddle. The transparency allows you to place the rubber on the paddle without gluing...you can shim it right or left a few mm to line it up and then press the part down that's hanging off at the bottom. Remove the transparency sheet (or if your super anal retentive slide it out and press as you go). Not sure if my description is clear...and I'm hella tired right now... |

Have not had an update in a while, so here it goes... * Playing reasonably well lately. No dramatic breakthroughs, but rallies are longer, serves are shorter, less nerves and frustration in matches. *FH is slowly improving, judging by feedback I am getting. Still struggle against backspin, though. * Started to receive more with inverted - it helped quite a bit against no-spin serves, especially short/middle. ones. * Got a bit more aggressive/active with LP, and learned a couple new shots, I think. * My league and tournament ratings more or less converged. Given the past history of league rating being at least 100 point above tournament one, I guess I'm a bit overrated there. Will donate some points next week at Westchester, I'm sure |

Had at least one bad loss and got exposed on the BH once again (it 'helped' to be matched against 3 other LP players in one of RR groups AND then play a carbon copy of myself (but higher level) in elimination. Lost that one in 5 after mounting a comeback from 0-2. Did play NextLevel and lost in 5, again. On a bright side, finally did beat one of my old foes, lefty with an anti, in a tournament setting. |

I met him in a tournament once and lost 1-3. The guy has an impressive background having played in 359(!) tournaments and been over 2000! |

I lost to him in 2015 in an U1900 group when I got back to USA, but advanced and won U1900 anyway. Who sez a loser can't win it all? The guy I defeated in 2018 LA Open group, defeated me in U50 finals. It happens. |

Huh, 2+ year hiatus for this 'blog'... Well, 15 months of that was due to that Covid thing, so I have at least some excuse. Went to the club for the first time since pandemic/lockdown started - it felt good, psychologically at least. Game-wise it was hilarious - I literally missed the ball on my first forehand and put two first serves into the net. Pip side was even worse.  Still enjoyed it though, plan to go back again soon.I figure I can only go up from here, correct? Lost at least a 'level' (300+ points) in my game, if you can call it that. Looks like lots of folks in the club improved quite a bit, so I need to prepare to lose to several players I used to beat. |

After a couple of tournaments I can safely say that I am a solid USATT 1700 player now. Lost quite a bit of feel on BH, FH is not spectacular either, and overall conditioning + match smarts are quite rusty. Re-learning quite a few things: forgot that I need to be active on my LP shots, anticipation is in shambles, and moving is a challenge somehow. Dabbled a bit with a fast balsa setup (sure does produce weird LP balls) - smashing is fun, but too many balls go long in matches.  Went slow for now instead, with Barricade, just to up consistency. And as if I don't have enough paddles - decided to grab a Firewall Plus with green Dtecs that recently became available. Because why not.

pgpg, It takes only a few months to get back to 90 percent, the other 10 percent slower, but you will get it. |
