Darn glue sheets.

ITTF rules state:

2.04.01 The racket may be of any size, shape or weight but the blade shall be flat and rigid.

2.04.05 The blade, any layer within the blade and any layer of covering material or adhesive on a side used for striking the ball shall be continuous and of even thickness.

Can I still use this blade? What about blades with lesser damage?

Blades are checked for flatness at 4 points on the blade. I am sure that would show up as illegal. It would leave a visible error.

That gets into the realm of whether you would be caught or not.

For the sake of discussion, what if there were no visible signs and all the damage was under the rubber? Any significant splinter damage to the top layer of the blade renders it neither flat, nor of continuous and even thickness. Strictly speaking I believe such a bat would be technically illegal under ITTF rules.

I do not understand what you are trying to draw from this. The blade is illegal. If there are rubbers on it and the rubber looks smooth, it might get by the check but the blade is still illegal.

Yes. Almost brand new too.


Just interested to see if anyone had another opinion.

I also think it's too far damaged to be considered legal.

Did you seal the blade before using the glue sheet? Some glue sheets are rediculously strong, and I've also ruined a blade like this. Giant Dragon ones are particualrly strong

You can sand it down and add another ply. Nicks and scrapes along the edges can be fixed with wood filler. I've managed to recover worse blades.

Strictly speaking, the blade in its current state is not legal by ITTF standards.

"All your spin are belong to us!"

It was from the built in glue sheet on one of the Dr Neubauer antis. Those things destroy blades. I wish there was a way to fix it. The only sealing was hair spray.

This can easily be fixed. Make some fine sawdust from hardwood, mix it with wood glue to form a paste, and fill in all the cracks. Let them dry overnight and sand out the excess.

A good reason not to use glue sheets...

I have been using Donic glue sheets that have a less sticky side for the blade. Works very well and won't damage any blade when I peel it off.

Before that I used Tibhar glue sheet that's equally sticky on both sides...

While hairspray helps bind the grain togather, it is not near as strong as Poly-U.

Hairspray is NOT a sealer, at least not against water. Take a piece of toilet paper, spray it with hairspray. Make it a heavy coat if you want. Then dry it well. Put water one it and it instantly goes limp again. The water disolves the hairspray instantly. Water based glue will do the same thing, instantly. Do the same with Poly-U and it becomes waterproof.

So hairspray might help with a glue sheet, (no water) but for real protection with blades prone to splintering, I would use Poly_U. Especially expensive blades or blades with a very thin top ply.
