I came across the ITTF Hall of Fame.

-Any comments?
-Any surprises who is on it or who isn't?
-Anyone you would like to see go on this list?

I wonder how this works? It seems many players that were famous decades ago, have only made the list recently. Perhaps you need to be nominated?

Where is Adham on that list? 8)

Players I am surprised to see on the list: Ma Long, and may be Chen Qi.

Players I'd like to see on the list (and I admit I am biased towards my favourite players):
Stellan Bengtsson, Kjell Johansson, Zhang Li, and Yang Young-Ja.

Adham?...well, may be ITTF Hall of _ _ ame...someone fill in the blanks.

:)

One name I am very surprised not on the list: Mitsuru Kohno.
World singles champion.
He won medals of different colours in different World Championships, in singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and team competitions.
Very surprised. :o

Chen Qi being there is just plain ridiculous. Bengtsson is the obvious omission and Kohno to a lesser extent. Bengtsson was probably the best performed player in the world for 5 years and also won a world singles and world teams (Undefeated in teams matches in 73).

Johannson, Surbek, Chang Li, Klampar all deserve consideration.

Wikipedia says:
"To qualify for the ITTF Hall of Fame, an athlete must have won a minimum of five gold medals in Table Tennis World Championships, Olympic Games, and Paralympic Games."

ITTF says:
http://www.ittf.com/museum/hof/hof.html

I guess a few great players don't qualify.

Both Bengtsson and Kohno missed by 2.
Both Johansson and Zhang Li (Chang Li) missed by 1.

Xu Xin needs one more. He will get it just by being on the winning team next time?

Dr Neubauer has seven veterans world championships. I wonder if he qualifies?

So maybe Neubauer qualifies and Schoeler doesn't. That would be a hoot.

I think the "team gold medal" should be de-emphasized for this ITTF Hall of Fame. China will probably win most if not all of the team gold medals in the near future. This gives the top Chinese players an advantage.

Even if we have a hypothetical "super-Waldner" player coming out of Europe, winning the next 3-4 World Singles (only), he will not quality to be in the ITTF Hall of Fame?

Medals, medals, medals. How sad. It's just another part of the 'dumbing down' process where we now evaluate worth or performance purely by the resultant silverware. It's like, and I quote Oscar Wilde: "A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing."
