Maybe I didn't really keep up my maximum level. I never really trained for myself after 1994 or so.

BTW, I am back to shadow play-only mode, with occasional service practice on the table. I actually think that shadowplaying the step around footwork & windmill forehand helped to improve the shot. When I had a chance to play for a couple of weeks not a long time ago, I noticed that it was more consistent than before. Especially when I tried to attack a popped serve return cross-court from the BH position with my forehand. My backhand was in ruins, though.

The secret to maintaining a level is to play practice games instead of training drills. But don't expect to learn new shots or improve your technique, unless you have an amazing imagination. But also don't be surprised if you improve your level through hundred of training matches.

Are you back in lock down again?

I wonder what happens to everyone when they are periodically locked up for a few years. I think we are all about to find out :^) :^) :^) I've had my 5 months of hard lockdown/quarantine and now I'm temporarily a free man.

I am in a voluntary lockdown. The gyms are open, people are training and playing tournaments, but I avoid them. I have a vulnerable family member I live with, so I try to be extra cautious. Schools and university are open too, so the number of cases is on the rise nation-wide. I suspect that everything will be closed again in a month or so, like it happened in some other countries.

Hey Brett, is the promised new ttedge.com videos coming out soon? Or are you just having too much fun out of lock down in India and enjoying playing tt in Australia again?

Hey Maurice,

I've tried to make it clear that ttEDGE should be now used as an online coaching service. The best use of the service is to send me short clips of your shots and work with me to improve your game. Lots of people do it, and many don't.

I am working on more videos that hopefully don't help you too much because you've watched all existing ttEDGE videos and followed this thread. The upcoming videos are an over simplification of how to play each shot and my aim is to teach each individual shot, or combination, in 1-2 minutes. Members are then asked to work with me online, as per the above paragraph.

I find it amazing that members don't use this coaching service even more. There is no restriction on quantity and people pay a lot to have me coaching them live. Live demand exceeds my willingness to supply.

The ttEDGE.com library is fairly complete. I don't know a lot more than what has already been published. The new videos are designed to limit confusion and not to teach many new concepts. They are simple animations and it will be interesting to see the reaction.

It seems to me that doing a big swing vs backspin all the time doesn't seem to always be possible. I found this and I feel like I need this in my game. Any thoughts? A smaller backswing than the 2020 video content but gets the attack going.

https://youtu.be/51CZ7cojxE4?t=401
Also I watch this TT porn almost daily before practice.

This happened in a practice game yesterday. Nearly same situation - I went to go push. It isn't nearly as good but still heaps of value!

If by big.swing, you mean a large upper arm motion that is slightly out of sync with the body then no.

Other than that, you can do any swing if the ball.comes long and you can get into position. The problem.is that as you get better and play better players, they take away your time and give you higher quality everything (pushes, misdirects, etc) so being flexible with your preparation is a positive not a negative.

My 2 cents.

Take a look at Ma Long's leg twisting.

He didn't swing big, although he did manage to completely straighten his arm, even though he had very little time after changing his mind. I think the leg work is the most important factor. I try not to focus on the length of a backswing, unless it looks highly unusual.

Russ, I watched all of your games and I like what you are doing. You got off to a bit of a slow start, but then you found your game. I especially like what you are doing on the backhand.

I'm going to go to the hall and play lots of matches today myself. I'm a huge fan of playing lots of matches to find one's game, as I've mentioned before. I also find playing matches to be the most fun I can have in TT.

I think this is mostly true. I know that better players rob you of time and leave you struggling to make shots. We all know this feeling very well.

As you get better though, you actually gain time, so it's all relative again.

Too early to start planning the Sept/Oct 2021 USA Training camp?

Ma Long was looping a half-long push. Looping those is hard, and swinging big is even harder at those. Form follows function.
