Something I have wondered about in the table tennis world,is why do literally all table tennis training online channels, rubber reviews, etc. (except for here, of course) only focus on offensive play and not defense? There is no consistent video instruction to play as a modern defender- at least not recent. Ping skills had one, and I applaud them for that. But who else?

Oh, there plenty of instruction for offensive or attacking player for playing and winning against a modern defender, but is there a video out (can you show me one?) that offers instruction (equipment, technique, tactics, etc) for a modern defender to defeat an attacking player? Why is this? Its a stunning omission in my opinion. Perhaps, as do most things, it comes down to money. I dont know.

This last July, Hou Yingchao won the 2019 China National Championship. The China national championship! As a modern defender! And yet there are no instructional videos on defense? Why?

Can you imagine what role the defender/ modern defender would play in this sport if it was actively promoted and taught as much as attacking style of play?

Thanks and interested in your thoughts. If I am overlooking an entire series on defensive play and tactics, forgive me. I have not seen it.

Agree.

There's quite a bit of material in Japanese on Youtube. Search for Koji Matsushita.

Not surprising, really (and definitely not "stunning" since it's easily explained).. most people will make videos on what they know about. And most table tennis players who make videos are offensive players. Why? Because most players ARE offensive players. And why is this? I think it's a natural consequence of the current nature of table tennis - everything from the ball to the allowed racket surfaces to the rules to the size of the table to.. well, maybe that all the players are human beings with a specific set of physical abilities, with a range, of course. You'll find offensive players abound in the top echelons of the sport, with comparatively fewer defenders of any sort. At the height of the frictionless pips era the top ranked user was ranked what, 100 or so? This wasn't always the case, from the 1930s to the 1950s there were many, many top defenders, they'd regularly win the World Champs. Equipment was slower, tables were less uniform, perhaps humans weren't so well developed physically (better nutrition these days, the average American is quite a bit taller these days compared to the 1949s). Unfortunately there was no YouTube back then and movie cameras and film were expensive.

So it really is no mystery. If you feel there should be more defense videos, well, heck, there are one or two business models out there, copy them. See what TTEdge does, try to replicate it with some defensive players and coaches and make videos. You never know, you might get enough customers to make it pay.

Excellent response, and I appreciate it. I asked this same question to Dan and Tom on the Tabletennisacademy channel and they basically said that its because the top pro players are attacking players and so that drives the interest in the non professional crowd, as well. I thought after Hou Yingchaos victory it might increase the interest in defensive (which I suppose is a broad term), but perhaps that is not the case.

Thanks once again for your thoughtful response, and this forum is truly the exception to the rule. I see many different viewpoints here and the promotion of many styles of play.

Check out http://www.tt-helden.de

This is a commercial site dedicated to table tennis instructional videos. In collaboration with Ruwen Filus they have quite some lessons for play as or against defenders. German language only.

Interesting that rubbers are not mentioned at all. I'd expect the forehand and backhand chops to differ radically from each other because most choppers use long pips on the backhand and inverted on the forehand.

The woman in the video is Joanna Drinkhall (Joanna Parker before she married) and she played with Tenergy 05 on both sides. I think it was 1.7 on BH and 1.9 on FH.
But you don't find many double inverted Choppers. Especially not on higher levels.

Aha... So Tenergy 05 is viable even for choppers who use inverted on both sides. Though she's probably more of a modern chopper and loops more than.. er, whatsisname.. Ch.. ch.. you know who I mean..
