That thread chronicles the development of my modern defender student Jayden. Jayden is still playing and was top 10 last month. But the reality is he has been a bit of a challenge to work with. He is very strong willed, does not like to work hard, and for some time has preferred computer games to table tennis. We had a tournament last weekend and he napped much of the day, as he had been up all night playing computer games the night before. In any case, I felt like it would be nice to take on another modern defender project with a student who is a little more committed and disciplined .

Jonah is 12 and has been playing about a year now. He started privates with me a few months ago. He has chopped some balls before with a borrowed paddle, but yesterday the conversion to the dark side became official. The inverted came off one side of Jonah's paddle and a sheet of Pogo .6 replaced it. Jonah is starting TT very late. But, he is very disciplined, focused, and works hard. He is currently playing 5-6 days a week, and I think he is going to make some quick progress. The videos above are few of the drills we did.

Isn't Pogo only legal till the end of the year according to the latest LARC?

Is your next thread "What can my student use instead of Pogo?"? Or could it be "It ends"?

I was not aware of that. However, it does not change much, as Pogo was not chosen for a long term solution. Just a cheap starter pip that is easier to use than most. After his strokes get more established, and we have a better idea of his style and preference, we will change to a more specialized pip.

The camera angle makes those chops look really high..

Its nice to see a 12yr old playing defence instead of all of the boring coached robots that are churned out nowerdays.

Jonah has been working hard and is making some good progress.

Sacramento Open 1st place U600, U750, U900GRRB. Missed first in the U1050GRRA via games WL% in a 3 way tie brake.
