I was at a local umpires and referees association meeting when this topic came up.

Prior to covid it was often the case that when just another player was "umpiring" or scoring a match, many would just flip the score machine and not announce the score for each point.

Then covid came along and, at least locally, score machines were not allowed to be used. It was hoped that this would mean that the score would now be announced. This was not to be. People would hold up their hands with fingers raised in a myriad of ways to somehow represent the score and still no score announced. Parents and coaches were complaining that they could not tell what the score was for their player.

One of the people at the meeting suggested that we as players in this position could both set an example and cajole the "umpire" or scorer to announce the score. This member gave the example where a match they were in as a player did not have "Love all" announced at the beginning so did not start serving. When asked they responded that the person in charge of the match had not allowed them to start play, and pointed out that in the rules the actual score was what had been announced, not what was shown on a score machine or whatever.

Does this happen to you? Or do you do this yourself when "umpiring" a match?

With us the score is almost always called out... and if it's not for match that I'm playing, I'll request that the umpire calls out the score. I find it distracting if the score is not called out.

I agree. When I am a player in a match I always request that the score be called out. I pretty much usually know the score my self, so this is in case it is being kept wrongly so that it can be corrected as soon as it is wrong. Otherwise it can be too late.
