Being nervous is normal. It can stem from any number of things like fear of failure to really caring about what you're doing. Nervousness can often be like fear and one of the ways to overcome this is by facing it. Taking a substance should always be a last resort, because it can become a crutch and, therefore, a major weakness, especially if you can't get hold of the substance. Worse still, using substances in many cases doesn't really deal with the issue - at least in the long term. It's a very personal thing, but I know for me I'd rather try and deal with it in more longer lasting ways.

You say you're 'very nervous' in tournaments. Do you feel this way in other circumstances? If this is a real problem and you're having difficulty dealing with it be cautious about advise you get on the Internet. If it's a real problem it would be worth talking to a health care professional, especially one that isn't going to prescribe drugs as their first option.

I'm fairly certain that most of us feel nervous in certain situations. I know I have. I also think most of us realise that nervousness can and will decrease over time. Maybe you just need to be patient and not place too much emphasis on the situation you're in. I know this is easier said than done.

When I first started playing competition I had moments when nerves would take over. I did the usual things like deep, steady breathing and trying to relax (and a bit of self-talk like "Okay, it'll be fine"). At first it was a struggle, but over a little time (maybe after playing for a couple of months) I found I was becoming less and less nervous. Nowadays, nervousness only creeps in rarely. And if it does, I have ways to deal with it.

Good luck!

You trace the Japanese (actually Chinese) character for "person" on the palm of your hand, and then "swallow" it.

Oh wait.. that's actually for stage fright. Oh well.. more or less the same thing, right?

Try to avoid coffee and drinks with caffeine substance. Do breathing exercises to calm the nerves. :P . And play a lot of tournament and money games.

Avoiding caffeine is an excellent piece of advice. I've found that it makes me extra "on edge". I can play much better if I haven't had caffeine, much more calm and at ease. Also, don't have any heavy food or meals, they will make you feel sluggish.

Guinea Hen Weed (aka Anamu) tea. Also a potent anti-inflammatory for those post-game aches and pains.

I always find it also helps me to play a game or two at the tournament when I'm warming up, to get me into the mind frame of putting points together, and being in a "competitive" situation, even though it's just a practice game.

It is interesting that in SOME sports (in this case, wrestling), they actually take caffeine deliberately before competing. Hmm. What other sports? Running, maybe? Boxing?

I don't recommend anything except stopping caffine. learn to revel in the tension of the moment. that is part of competition. even taking meds and alchol will decrease one's preformance. I go in with the attitude that "I don't care if I lose but I'm going to go down swinging" and as I hit harder I loosen up for better or for worse.
