Post subject:  Playing with a broken wrist!

One of my team mates fell during practice and broke her left wrist, which is now in plaster. She's right handed, and still wants to play, but can't twist her hand to balance or otherwise toss the ball up to serve.

Any suggestions? Have you experienced this before? Are there some exceptional cases, eg, always receiving serve? Something else? Or does she just have to accept she can't play for 4 weeks?

I don't see why she couldn't "play" but as far as the matches being official or whatnot… just make them not official. Just come up with whatever rules (like always receiving) that suit the conditions.

No tournaments or anything, though. Nothing official, as those should follow strict interpretations of the rules.

Sorry - I meant in the league.

I believe that there is something in the ITTF rules:
2.06.07 Exceptionally, the umpire may relax the requirements for a correct service where he or she is satisfied that compliance is prevented by physical disability.

I would say that plaster on the arm would satisfy most umpires that there is a (temporary) physical disability.

An AWD player that I know slightly whose left arm is somewhat useless due to cerebral palsy had to decide whether to serve by throwing the ball up with his racket hand or do the best he could with the arm affected by cerebral palsy. In either case the serve would not be strictly according to the rules.

There may also be some concern about the safety of playing with the plaster on - balance may be affected, and also what if she falls over again?

Well, if the rule cited in the question above doesn't suffice, I'd say that she has to sit out for awhile if by "the league" you mean a series of somewhat strict competitions.

I think all competitions (in any sport) should be contested under the rules. That's why they're there, and it's not our place to begin modifying them for this reason or that reason. So if the "disability" rule doesn't work, I'd say she sits out.

If "the league" is not a strict competition and is more just a social activity, then let her play with whatever rules y'all think are fair. Certainly foregoing service shouldn't benefit her.
