I fractured my left wrist (I'm right handed and use my right arm and hand to play) seven weeks ago, but now am already out of my cast and am eager to resume playing table tennis. My doctor has even said that the bone is "completely healed". However, my parents refuse to allow me to train or play in tournaments, because they are afraid that I might injure my left wrist by moving around and doing strokes, or that some random accident can happen (like stepping on a ball and falling down). Can't seem to convince them otherwise, so I really need some help because it's really been a long time since I played and I don't want to lose too much of my former skill. Also, I have already bought a wrist brace to wear while I play.

Can anyone tell me what the risk involved with injuring the nondominant hand is while playing table tennis? Or, in general, whether it's safe for me to resume playing?

I broke my right wrist in the summer, and I play right-handed. I started playing again with the cast still on, which was probably not a great idea. Anyway, it is still not completely better, and I have restricted movement, which I can't help but feel is down to the metal plate. You're clearly much younger than me, and should heal much quicker. I would concentrate on the physio work to get it back to full flexibility, and worry about table tennis later.

I suppose one shouldn't take what novelists write as gospel, but I think Dick Francis knew more about riding as a jockey than most people.. I recall in one of his books the character mentioned that jockeys avoided getting casts when they fractured something - not a really bad fracture but a cracked bone, which often happened if you had a fall. They'd get the doctor to bandage it well, and perhaps splint it, but apparently a cast which immobilizes the limb or joint results in a longer recovery time, while being able to move it and put weight on it once it started to heal would keep things flexible and it would heal better and faster. So maybe playing while your arm was still in the cast wasn't such a bad idea.. YMMV - probably better talk to your doctor before doing anything, of course..
