As usual, the news clip doesn't go into details. This "moon" (they actually plan several) will NOT light up the entire night hemisphere, it will be fairly small and in fairly low earth orbit. It's meant to light up, at the most, a city. Since it's in low Earth orbit, it will move fairly fast across the sky (the ISS orbits once every 90 minutes or so, to give you an idea, this "moon" would probably orbit somewhat higher) so it won't be able to keep station above any given spot for very long, but it should be able to aim it's "spot" over a city for a matter of 2-3 hours at a time. With a fleet of these you could light up several large cities for a few hours every night - they'd probably target "prime time" hours, say 8pm-midnight.

So unless you live in one of the cities which these are planned for, you shouldn't get light pollution from them. Besides, light pollution is mainly from badly designed light fixtures that lose some of their light upwards - reduce the need for the light fixtures and you'd end up with less light pollution.

One thing's for sure, though, these will bust the whole Flat Earth thing wide open...

I don't know why Mac doesn't inline his videos. Not only that - the link he posted goes straight to the end of it. Here it is in its entirety:

Personally, I'm disappointed - I thought it might be another one of those clips from "Der Untergang", with fake/joke subtitles. This clip (with the real subtitles this time):

That was a REALLY GOOD MOVIE, by the way. I watched the whole thing in a cinema some years ago.

Most of you won't get this, but to those who speak the language (there are quite a number here).. well, I was laughing so hard I had to wipe the tears from my eyes. A "mamak" is an Indian muslim (not sure what the word means, something like "Brother" in one of the southern Indian languages), and the "mamak" referred to here is an (southern) Indian muslim restaurant. Sort of an institution around these parts. This got mentioned in the paper this morning and I just looked it up.

Mamak... Hoo ooo ooo...

The giant paper thosai? That was a huge one. I must admit I like thosai (dosa to most Indians) for breakfast, and I like it crisp and crunchy. But it's got to come with tomato chutney and most mamak restaurants don't have the tomato chutney.

Yeah, I got the "annee" - but around here you usually address the waiters as "Boss!!". (I'm surprised he didn't put "Boss" in the song..) The waiters often have a trait said to be common with French waiters - they're often quite surly and act bossy!

Did you notice the guy in the title screen looks like Freddie? The post-haircut Freddie that is.

I remember this from a mailing list I'm on. Except it wasn't on YouTube yet. Interesting ending..

Just noticed, though - the "long-long man" also has a hairstyle reminiscent of... someone who was the focus of a recent movie?? (The post-haircut Freddie.. though Freddie didn't have the goatee..)

Speaking of thosai (or dosas) - about a couple years ago I kept seeing ads for this machine EVERYWHERE (YouTube, websites...):

What happens if you put water in the oil container and oil in the water container?? I wonder if it makes utthapams. CHOCOLATE dosa????? Never seen one, but:

"Dosamatic" does sound like something to do with medicine, though..

What to do when scammers call... Annoy the heck out them.

$380. $80. $380. $3.80..

Wouldn't work for me, though, I'm not inventive enough/can't think fast enough. I ALWAYS think of the perfect thing to say a half hour too late.
