One of the points in the above video was that you are able to see the curvature from high up on a plane - lol

This is of course complete nonsense and can be verified by anyone who can afford to take a flight.

And we are supposed to believe the remainder of the video has some truth...

Yes. You are quite right!
  • Full of accounts of personal experiences.
  • Hardly any scientific content.
  • We are supposed to believe it.
Sounds a lot like the umpteen-and-some videos someone else posted over the span of a couple of years.

Also, derogatory comments about other people, e.g. with reference to their financial situation, does not support the credibility of the person who makes that comment. Resorting to that level is often a panic sign:
Can't discredit the message? Discredit the messenger!

something I don't understand - what do flat earthers actually believe, other than the earth is flat?

For example:
- what shape is the earth - square/ rectangular/ flattened like the maps?
- how deep/ "thick" is the earth?
- what is at the "bottom/ underside of the earth?
- Does the earth rest on anything, or is it floating (without spinning) in space?
- Do the other planets spin, or move, or even exist?
- is there an "edge" to the earth? What happens at this edge?

If mac33 could answer these questions, either from his or someone else's point of view, maybe I could understand what the discussion is about. Please, NOT a link to some generic rambling video

Best quote from the above video:

"If the Earth is flat, there would be an edge(s). And there would be a freaking Disney park at the edge, and we could bungee jump off the side and paraglide into the void, etc. Someone would be making an absolute ton of money off of it--if it existed. Guess what? Nobody is doing that. In this world where absolutely everything is exploited for profit, if no one is making money off of it, then it does not exist. No edge. Not flat."

Well, both of those articles are just a monumental load of crap, aren't they? They don't answer any of the questions I asked

How the mainstream media and social media to a large degree shape our opinion.

GAB is where i found the links.

That figures.

Same subject, similar message, less gab:

I didn't know about gab.com, but after reading the gab reviews on sites like trustpilot and sitejabber, and browsing the "popular posts across gab", I certainly think that the place is one to watch. Not going there today, though. Maybe tomorrow. MaybeIdunno. Maybe leave it to someone else.

This is hilarious! I just saw this thread for the first time and thought it was new, and then after reading the first page (oldest), saw that there are actually 60 pages! Reminded me of the movie Dumb and Dumber where the one guy pretends for 20 years that he can't walk or talk. My hats off to you mac33 for keeping this going so long. I think you are the greatest troll to keep this discussion alive for 60 pages

I just wanted to thank you for the entertainment. To dig up all those articles to keep the joke going, all I can say is well done.

Looking forward to future posts

I love the dollar vigilante website video titles - it reminds me of when you are standing at the supermarket checkout, and the titles of all the Womens' (is that sexist - sorry!) magazines hit you in the eye.... "The Queen is an alien!" "ScoMo is pregnant!!", etc... Clickbait for bored people....

Pushsmasher - this has arguably been the biggest topic of discussion over the last 5 years in the alternate media.

No troll.

An open mind is indeed a rare thing - it seems.

You need to do in depth research of this subject first, otherwise your opinion is not an informed opinion.

I posted this exceptional interview in the previous page.

Watch the first 30 seconds of this clip.

It shows a completely horizontal horizon for like 100 miles or so.

A flat horizontal body of water on a spherical earth - lol

Me thinks observation should determine reality but alas for the masses their narrative will always be accepted - irrespective.

As always, a flat-earther will show us a picture of the horizon from sea level. In this setting you are observing the circle segment of "horizon" from the same plane as the circle lies on, in the circle's dead center.

Also, the iPhone camera has significant lens distortion and the iPhone employs digital correction to compensate for this, which makes any "flatness evidence" on this level totally worthless, even if you were filming from 10000 m elevation. If you examine closely (yes, I did), you may see that the horizon appears slightly concave in the video clip. This is the result of the iPhone overcompensating the barrel distortion in the lens, effectively yielding a slight "pincushion distortion".

Using the horizon line as "proof by visual" is utter rubbish at any level. For the human eye/brain to be able to (just barely) discern the curvature of the earth by horizon line, you need an elevation from the earth's general surface of ~1/1000 or more of the earth's diameter. The top of Mt. Everest is just short of that. The altitude of long distance flights is close. This kind of observation would also require a sharp view of the horizon (which virtually never happens) and no distorting media (e.g. curved glass surfaces, or air with varying density) between the viewer and the view.

Suggestions:
  • Draw a circle on a piece of plywood. Hold the piece so you only see the edge. Do you observe the curvature of the drawn circle?
  • Google for images of "Power lines lake Pontchartrain" (unless you happen to be in southeastern Louisiana to observe it first hand). You see a straight row of identical power masts, all at water surface level. Looking along the line, the vertical curving is obvious.
  • Consider geometry classes...
