Hi, can anyone advise me if it's possible to increase the backspin and control off my l.p. chop block when returning heavy topspin. I've found that I don't develop much backspin so it's easy for my opponent to continue looping. Do I need a loose grip similar to blocking inverted and does the speed of the chop have any effect on this or do I need to just alter the bat angle.

Not a chop-blocker, but here's two players demonstrating the technique

First video is in OX (no sponge). I don't know how heavy the topspin is in this video, but it might still be useful to see how the stroke is executed.

Second video is in 1.0mm sponge. He starts chopblocking around ~1:05, and looking at the other player's stroke its safe to say that the topspin is pretty high. I'm not sure if its because of the thicker sponge, the potentially higher incoming topspin, or variations in technique (or some combination of the 3) but the chopblocking here seems different than in the first video.

Hope this helps!

Do you have to adjust both:

-Loose grip for the speed
-Bat angle for the spin

BTW it's very difficult to chop-block a power or heavy topspin, better concentrate to return the ball.

Reviving an old thread:

My chop block game is horrible. Been working with a coach who does not use LP and it has been a flail. Last session he hit on something that helped me and I am wondering what others think. He told me to keep the paddle close to me. My consistency immediately went way up. Has anyone else heard this?

As far as I know when you are close to the table this is the only way to return heavy loops.

This guy has pretty good chop block form. Que it up to 1:50 and turn on subtitles.

There are a more things to increase consistency for chop-blocks.

1- Take the ball just the bounce.
2- Before the ball impact move the body up, at the moment of impact move the body down.
3- Make the stroke compact with a small wrist motion brushing the ball

Good lucky & a lot of training guys!!!
