Can someone explain this to me? If video, all the better.

In my head, a "roll shot" is where the ball "rolls" allong the pips, but you sort of guide the ball with the blade by closing the blade over the DURING the stroke. Am I correct in this? So the blade starts open when first contact is made, and then closes as the force is applied, during the stroke.

Or is it simply brushing the ball with the pips to create topspin?

looks like it has a bit more top spin than it is , realy just a weaker/ false roll loop that you hope your opposition dumps it down

For me the "roll" is not the ball rolling, but rolling of the blade.

You put the blade kind of under the ball horizontally and then roll your wrist to move blade to more vertical position while you hit the ball. You kind of carry the ball over the net and horizontal blade position prevents the underspin taking the ball to the net.

I use roll typically against heavy choppers underspin with my ox pips. The shot is easier to execute with slower and dwellier equipment.

Ah...it sounds like the term doesn't mean the same thing to everyone, which is important because the stroke is referenced a lot in the techniques sections, and equipment reviews.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wasn't clear. I perform the brush roll, and the blade roll, but when someone says "The LP performs rolls very well" it would be nice to know which technique they are really speaking about.

For me, the roll shot, where the blade is turned is good when the ball dips to a lower height, and you need to help the ball get over the net.

The brush roll is mostly for higher balls you are attacking, and not flat hitting, send back a little topspin as Rodderz explained, but still getting some arc. You hope for a net ball in return.

A stroke in which the player uses the wrist to "roll" the bat to return the ball to an opponent.

There you go! It's not the brush stroke.

There seem to be many threads about this stroke with different opinions, but for me you just have to roll something to make roll a roll.
