Post subject:  Standard Short Pip FH Stroke

I had this question on another thread but want to put in the proper place.

What is the difference between a standard SP FH stroke and an inverted FH stroke. From my understanding, a SP stroke is the same as an inverted driving FH stroke at least close to the table. The difference being that with inverted I wouldn't be able to pull that stroke off on heavy backspin balls, especially short ones unless I do a different stroke like a flip. And with SP I wouldn't be able to counter-loop.

Is this correct or am I missing something with regards to the standard short pip forehand stroke?

a standard short pips stroke is a very short explosive hit whereas the standard inverted stroke is a loop, with a much longer motion that starts from near below the table which aims to create a spin on the ball. looping with a short pimple usually only occurs when the ball hast too much backspin to be hit. you might want to check out videos of short pimple players on youtube and compare their motions with those of the standard players.

I only use 3 forehand strokes with my NP-8, brush loop against heavy underspin deep low serves/returns ;basic forehand drive against low, deep top spin, with end of stroke ending in front of my face; and the smash against anything return that is too high, with the stroke ending across my chest, below the left shoulder or lower, depending on high the ball I hit is. I will not use a short pips that I cannot brush loop with because it affords me more options when needed. I used to be an inverted forehand looper until my age caught up with me. I still need inverted on my backhand, which I can twiddle when needed.

Thanks funk and AA that's what I thought.

Two of those strokes is what I've been taught and doing for exactly the situations described.

Thank you for the explanations!
You also have a basic (low) push, right? Flicks? And you play with 2.0 sponge, right?

And for looping long pushes/serves, are you able to do it without the big upwards (correct) all-body motion
(which I try to avoid, nevermind that I never did it correctly)?
