Players seem to obsess with spin and creating it, but often neglect control and placement. How good is your placement?

If you were asked to hit 6 A4 sized pieces of paper placed on your opponents side of the table (3 close to the net left, centre and middle and 3 long, wide to FH, into the pocket and BH) how many goes would it take for you to hit all 6 pieces of paper.

I can do some killer side-spin serves. Just don't ask me where the balls will fly

My No.1 goto serve is short heavy under-spin serve. I can vary its length and spin within A4 sheet location :-) Unfortunately it becomes a flick-magnet ... since I do it too often.

Side-spin, down-the-line, reverse-pendulum are the few other variations but not fully mastered.

I can't do the Tomahawk for the life of me, it just doesn't spin properly at all!

Also I am a Fault-serve specialist  Tend to fault when 8-8 or 9-9 or 10-10 :-P

Hence, a singles player most of the time :-D

Add a little bit of side spin sometimes and develop a no spin variation with a very similar action.

Well, I serve long pendulum serves pretty often: to the BH side, into the body, and down the line (although when serving the latter I miss the corner sometimes). So it'd take me 3-4 serves to hit all pieces of paper that are placed at the edge of the table.
Short serves should also be no problem: I'd serve a backspin-sidespin that spins out of the table for the BH corner, and pure backspins for the middle of the table and the FH corner.

Hmmm. I believe that if I am not too sure about where my serve is going until the ball has left the bat, the opponent doesn't know either. So, although I can serve long short and mid, and left right and centre, various spins etc, I don't really obsess over where it will go in terms of a few inches. Of course, I do sometimes serve long and off the table, and sometimes serve into the net, but I prefer to see that as a sign that I am trying a little harder, and it doesn't worry me a lot. In fact one or two faults a match are possibly better than none. Not at 10-9 though.

I do try to place other strokes more precisely though, because the position of the opponent and the opponent's shots will vary a lot more than their service receive position.

When I think up a serve my first thought is:

Top spin or back spin?
Deep or short?
Middle, left or right?

I'm pretty happy if I execute those 3 things. More importantly I have noticed is serve height. If the ball stays low there is a much bigger chance for errors on the return. Some serves need not be too low, like deep serves. On those I want depth near the white line.

I do have a couple of 'trick' serves that are angled and very short. Those must be accurate.

I could definitely improve my placement on my serves. It's not that can't aim it well enough, it's just that I tend to get a bit lazy. I do vary the spin a lot though.

Strange. Serves are the most important shot in the game yet for the majority of players I see, so little thought or practice seems to go in to them. Why do you think that is?

See it as boring. It's the same reason golfers don't practice putting and short game play but instead are at the driving range booming hundreds of balls even though it's the short stuff that makes the far bigger difference to scoring.

Thanks! Ppl very easily predict my no spin serves and it is a putaway smash for them.

I already use the side-spin variations with cut and topspin ... mostly works out okay ... as long as i can keep it in the table.
:-D
