Post subject:  Gambler Platinum 40mm celluloid/poly blend
I saw these on sale at Zeropong for a good price. Has anyone tried them out, and if so what did you think? I'm considering grabbing a pack to replace the assorted 1-star balls we've been using for our lunch and after-hours league at work.

Never tried them but Zeropong usually puts out a decent quality product.

I bought a pack and they came in the mail yesterday. The balls were shipped loose in a plastic bag; none appeared to be damaged in shipping. From a visual inspection, the seam is a little more visually noticeable than on other 3* balls I've played with but when rolling the ball it doesn't seem to cause veer.

I'll try them out out work this coming week and see how well they play.

Played a few games with the new balls over the past two days. IMO they're pretty great. Definitely a bit spinnier than 40+ poly balls, good bounce, and they seem very consistent. They are also much brighter orange than any other ball I've played with, at least when new.

A coworker and I measured a few with calipers and they all turned out around 39.6mm, incidentally.

39.6mm might explain the extra spin.

When you break one, set it on fire and see how quickly it burns... It's probably just older celluloid balls, or maybe they're made using the same tooling as the older celluloid balls even if the plastic's been changed.

Science update: the Gambler Platinum 40mm orange ball, advertised as a celluloid/poly blend, goes up like a torch when you light it. There was no identifiable ash left after the conflagration ended.

In comparison, the Stiga 1* 40mm(?) ball that I had on hand wouldn't really light up, melting and charring and creating a burnt plastic odor but not sustaining combustion.

I conclude that the Gambler ball contains celluloid as advertised and that the Stiga ball contains none.

Definitely celluloid.. and the 39.6mm diameter means they were made on the old pre-plastic ball machinery. If these are currently being made that means there is a high quality production line still operating somewhere. With access to celluloid blanks. There really weren't very many of these, we know of two in China that OEM'ed for a lot of brands, and they have been converted to 40+, though I suppose it might be possible to swap molds and dies in and out. What is far more likely is that these are old production.. when they're gone they're gone, so get more while the going is good.. :lol:

We used them at the church club. They are a little on the soft side, to me that's a good thing because the bounce is more predictable. No complaints about the ball's quality
