Is there a better way to toss a cracked ball? I asked my waste company if it was OK to recycle them with numbered plastics, but they did not know.

The new ones are ABS. That would make it "Other" or "7" under the Recycling Code used in the US.

What else is made of ABS? Mainly tough stuff like car parts (the grille, the parts that hold in the headlights, etc.) - so no, I don't think you can throw them in the recycling bin, that's used mainly for containers. The best I can think of is to collect them in one place (e.g. a club) and when you have a large amount of them contact the recyclers and tell them you have a bunch of ABS balls.

The old celluloid balls - you could always do this:

That is a good idea. I have also repurposed them into fishing bobbers. All you need to do is epoxy a swivel onto the ball. Or even a bent paper clip. It gets some funny looks on the pier but it works.
