Anyone remember these?

Double Happiness (this was long before they started calling themselves "DHS") was just one brand - there were others, such as Gold Cup. Note that the ones being auctioned here were from before the two color rule.

In actuality, they weren't from THAT long ago. Up to the 1980s and beyond you could buy this sort of racket all over Asia, mainly from Chinese bookstores. A lot of the ready-made rackets looked like this back then - thinnish, heavily varnished, round blades, quite heavy and hard. There were shakehands versions of these blades, too - bigger head, oval straight grip, also varnished. Even a lot of Butterfly's blades were like that - there was a series of blades with names like "English Style" ( straight grip wrapped with leather), "Swedish Style" (straight oval handle chopped off at an angle), "Chinese Style" (which looked just like these) - they were all quite varnished, especially around the handles. Not quite sure when "expensive style" blades (the kind you see today hanging from racks in department stores, with their Italian stacked veneer handles, looking very expensive and pretentious) took over the ready-made market.

In the late 80s we started seeing Chinese grad students in American universities in large numbers for the first time - a couple of them I met were actually second-tier National players, the woman was better than the man, but the man, who was doing a PhD in math, came to the club much more often. They were pips-out hitters, and they all played with rackets like this. I took him to a couple of tournaments, he won the open events. I forget what rating they gave him, something in the 2400s (which was pretty close to the top back then).

I suddenly have the urge to see if I can find any of these blades - I think I'll start trolling small Chinese bookstores - a dying thing in itself! the next few weekends.

Have you seen that DHS has re-released these blades, however with ridiculous prices?

Notice the weight is up to 115 grams! Ouch.

I find blades like this in OP shops / charity shops all the time. The are usually made from Basswood 5 or 7 plys. You used to be able to buy them in any sports shop in the 80s, they were cheap. (much cheaper than the Stiga premades of the time).

Thanks for the link. I'm buying a couple, I think. Note the rounded edges, no edge tape needed! The price is right.

Don't think it's the same thing, though - the edge of the blade isn't rounded, and the blade itself isn't heavily varnished.

I think there's nothing wrong with the cheap DHS N08S (7 ply basswood, about 115g), $20, for that kind of game.
It plays like a slightly softer Mazunov (not as soft as a Clipper).

I find it rather odd that dhs has two blades called N08S and (I think) N032S. Maybe they are remakes of the pf4's cheaply made?

I would agree this DHS retro handle being sold is a newer sort of construction. You can see the "black" glue layer which is seen on the regular 032 models of a couple years ago. I don't think the really old ones had the black glue or the alternate fat and thin wood layers. The fat layers even look like light mahogany (luan) not basswood.

Recently I bought some blades from DHS and Gold Cup.
The DHS G1832 2 times, they are 6ply and 7ply. The 2 Gold Cups are 7ply
an looks very similar the old DHS 08. Weight is about 95-105g.
One Gold Cup I restored with new handles from an old Yinhe-blade.
LP BH and SP FH.
Wow, speed and control in short game, the shot is unbelievable.
Why is this blade composition forgotten? Too cheap, no profit?
IsnĀ“t it the blade He Zhi Wen plays?
Cannot imagine anything thats better for SP aggressive play.

Too heavy, perhaps? And everyone seems to loop these days, even the hard batters!

Hi Iskandar, I'm reviving this old thread. How did you find the playing characteristics? I just bought 2 (old Friendship and Double Fish, both close to 7mm).

I find them VERY stiff and dense, yet not very bouncy. Close to what I was expecting during the previous "stiff/hard/linear" quest. Too heavy for 2 sided use, but I'm coming to appreciate the single side pips out style. A few observations:

1. Without a rubber on the back, every hit feels more crisp. I'm suspecting that a lot of people finding a blade not hard enough/stiff enough has alot to do with having soft rubber undereath their index finger (shakehand) and not the blade flexing itself.

2. Basswood is fairly soft, but impact feels a lot harder/denser than my 7-ply ebony surfaced blades. Is this psychological (hard ebony makes you think the blade is hollow) or something else?

3. On the same note, I have a Clipper also close to 7mm thick, but these bassword blades feel much much harder and stiffer. Technically limba/ayous are close to if not harder than basswood, what else is causing these differences? Could Meranti be mixed in with these woods? I read somewhere that they are hard to distinguish.

Gosh... I actually managed to find two or three of these, yet I never actually tried putting rubber on them and playing with them. One of the local craft stores sells basswood plywood (probably from China) so it'd be possible to make one's own, I think. They are heavy..
